Sasha Ring’s work under his Apparat moniker has always been evolving; over three albums on the Shitkatapult label and the collaborative full lengths with Ellen
Allien and Modeselektor as Moderat on Bpitch Control, he’s surprised a lot of
listeners with his output. Confined to little or no definitive style his music
has always been in a constant state of metamorphosis, simultaneously breaching
new waters and staying true to his unique spirit of musical openness and his
obvious passion for sound design.

Aptly joking that his DJ KiCKs selection reflects his style to “not really have a style” it’s evident that Ring is more than aware that his contribution to the
series might look ‘intelligent’ on paper – with the tracklist aligning variant
artists like Oval, Autechre, Ripperton and Thom Yorke – but given his recent
tour at the start of the year, it’s simply a representation of where he’s at in
terms of modern music. “I didn’t want to
make this kind of ‘smart’ mix, that’s eclectic and sounds like it’s done ‘on purpose;’
but I need to do different things to keep myself motivated,” Ring explains. “At
first I wanted to make a collection of influences, all kinds of old songs but
then sometimes with those mixes it’s hard to keep some kind of flow and they’re
just not very easy to listen to, so I ended up using good new music; music that
almost gave me hope that there’s more out there than boring minimal
techno.” The Apparat contribution is as
stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden; with
Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his
personality and his brave take on ‘club’ music. With an incredibly prevalent
talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from
a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn – whose ‘Miniluv’
provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice
Baumel’s ‘Sub’ – and Ramadanman’s ‘Tempest’ – whose melody all but dissipates
at the optimum moment – layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from
across an array of genres from Autechre’s percussive white noise to Oval’s
erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o’s
‘Intervall.’

“A mix needs a bit of dynamic,’ he states. “There were these weirder things I wanted to use, like this Four Tet remix (of Born Ruffian’s ‘I Need A Life’) and
then there are some tracks i had to use as tools to glue it all togehter. The
way I used the Martyn track is more of a tool to adjust the Patrice Baumel
track dynamically to the following ones. But most of the songs are in there for
musical reasons. All these artists have their own sound signatures and manage
to inject that space into every new song they produce.”

Achieving a sense of progression in the mix through both his selections and his awareness of sonic space, Ring manages to harness his enthusiasms for frequency perfect
soundscapes, often creating moments of sheer beauty out of his polarized
composite parts.

“The mix isn’t that balanced when it comes to melody I guess,” he continues, considering his point. “There’s a lot of sweetness on there, but it is dark and
mysterious at points. I guess the bittersweet-ness has long been kind of my
thing and with this mix I was just trying to spice it up a bit.”

ELECTRONICA WITH BBC CONCERT ORCHESTRA & JONNY GREENWOOD

Charles Hazlewood conductor
Jarvis Cocker presenter
Will Gregory Moog Ensemble

We have now released a number of tickets for restricted-view seats at this sold-out concert. You can reserve your ticket by phone 0844 847 9910 (£2.50 transaction fee). Transaction fees apply per transaction, not per ticket.

Instrumental music by Goldfrapp's Will Gregory, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and others featuring theremins, Moogs and ondes Martenots - electronic instruments that were once symbols of music catching up with the Machine Age, yet still today appear somehow futuristic.

Director Alfred Hitchcock invited surrealist artist Salvador Dalí to create a dream sequence for his film Spellbound. Miklós Rózsa's soundtrack for this scene evokes the otherworldly with a theremin - an eternally mysterious instrument that conjures sound without being touched.

Hollywood got wind of this and soon Bernard Herrmann's score for the 1951 sci-fi epic The Day The Earth Stood Still was made rich with sonic lunar landscapes created by wibbly wobbly theremins and a Hammond organ rewiring the conventional orchestral palette.

French composer André Jolivet's Suite delphique is a sonic monolith with woodwind, percussion and ondes martenot at its core.

And, moving into the Space Age, Wendy Carlos' synths transform familiar Bach melodies into mechanistic sound sculptures, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood infuses his rock albums with ondes Martenot glissandos and tremolos, bringing that tactile sound to his orchestral piece Smear, and Goldfrapp's Will Gregory reimagines the Moog synthesiser in his Journey into the Sky.

thanks a lot twitter friends !!!

Tropicana's weekly Nightswim party is always a great time, but last night's was especially awesome when it turned philanthropic with The Voice Project. Oh, and the musical genius of Radiohead, Thom Yorke, took over the turntables. Nightswim has been the Thursday night spot
throughout the summer, with a special guest DJ here and pop up shop there over
the weeks. Last night's installment of the party was presented by The
Voice Project, a group that works for the peace movement in Uganda through art
and music. The L.A. Ladies ChoirNigel Godrich,Ana Calderon, and Bryan Ling spun special sets for the crowd. The party hit awhole new level when the one-and-only Thom Yorke got on the decks.Yes, we're talking about the lead singer/songwriter of the eminent, Radiohead. Although L.A. tried to keep its 'too cool forschool' attitude in check, you know everyone was totally pooping their pants --an appropriate response to the musical icon. Dancing to Thom Yorke's musicalselection? Enough said. The night was fantastic, and all for a good cause. performed live for the attendees, and DJs.

Hi, bloggers!

I've heard Radiohead are doing their new album in 2010... and so... in three months we will be in 2011... Sorry for being impatient but I can't help it! I've listened all the other albums thousands of times and I (and others, i suppose) need more!

I wonder if the band will come back to Spain and play in Barcelona. It would be a dream come true!

See you soon beauties! Lots of Love!

You found that spot.

You cast my light into shadow and yet it feels good.
Something in me rises to your height and is knocked back by your words,
Falling fast into throes of laughter, about myself.

You found that place.
That ticklish spot
That everyone fears will be a home to tears.

You have figured out my plan
To see you reflect glorious in me.
You are not responsible for my decisions.

You are free.
To be loved and nurtured by your own unique part of me,
Immersed in the flow of things known and unseen.

Attention takes many forms.
Like the shadow of the rock we were sure was a frog.
We look on it in mystery. Never knowing whether it will hop away, or sit waiting to be unfound.

Like my body.
Awaiting your hands.
Awaiting your language.

I know who you are.
You don't need to hide or fear
Your words, at least, will not hurt me yet.

They carry the scent of truth,
Like those beautiful hands of yours,
Just waiting to weave into my hair for the very first time.

There are so many games that I have played throughout my so far seventeen year long life. Yet so few games have had such a powerful impact on me, like Mother 2/EarthBound and Mother 3 have had.

I was basically raised from the crib with videogames. Super Mario is the series that have been following me for the longest, from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the current Wii I have standing in my room. And then there's The Legend of Zelda. The fairy boy from the forest who set out to save the world and the royal family.

Two months ago, maybe even less, Matt introduced me to EarthBound, also known as Mother 2 but mostly called Earthbound. Anyhow, I was a bit skeptical at first, "what kind of a weird game is this?" Oh, I couldn't have been more wrong. Upon the ending of that game, I decided to follow the trail of the Mother series and I just finished Mother 3 this morning. You should've seen how I cried. Like a baby!

I highly recommend this game for all of you RPG fans. It's available anywhere on the Internet if you just put enough effort into finding it. The Mother series were only released in Japan on "real" consoles, so the only way we outside Japan can play it is on the computer. Nevertheless it works just as fine. Hopefully you'll enjoy one game or the other as much as I did.

I lay down knowing I may need to spend the night.

My ethereal transport. It takes me on a guided tour of a place outside myself. I leave this body to float above. Till I fall back in; slide back in gently and feel every cell tingling, tumbling. Just then, when I truly feel that I've landed, suddenly, I am lifted again. I have evaporated and reformed. Every part of me is in its right place.
