Its almost that time of year again. Where most of us will once again welcome our dysfunctional families into our homes to remind us how dissappointed they all are with our life decisions and give us miserable gifts. If you're jetting off somewhere warm this month to escape such persecution, consider L.A.

The 22nd installment of the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas promises to be one for the ages. Held at the Gibson Ampitheatre, December 10 & 11, this two-night extravaganza features literally the biggest names in the game. Classic throwbacks Blink-182, 311, Jane's Addiction and Bush will be appearing alongside The Black Keys, Cage The Elephant, Florence & The Machine and indie favorite Foster The People.  Also making an appearence will be ex-Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds. How high? Probably not as high as you'll need to be to deal with your family this Christmas...

For a complete list of performers check out the official site. More tickets will be available soon @ around $80 a night, or $150 for both. What other excuse do you need to 'go to the store for more eggnog' and never go back?

Feist On KCRW [MUSIC]

11010910874?profile=original

Feist recently appeared on Santa Monica's KCRW radio show, 'Morning Becomes Eclectic' to perform her ENTIRE new album, 'Metals.' Upon listening to her in studio, I must declare she is one of those artists I must see live--something for the ol' bucket list. She sounds absolutely amazing.

You can listen to the entire performance and hear her explain the 3 year break she took between albums [and how she enjoys fixing rusty shacks...seriously].  Go HERE to do so. Just click the lil' LISTEN icon.

Wish you were there? No problem. Just click the WATCH icon. You'll feel like she's singing just for you.

If you're not a fan of the radio--although you really should make an exception--download some live in-studio songs from her performance below.

A Little Birdy Turns Into A Phoenix [MUSIC]

11010910463?profile=original

If you have ever heard Tori Amos cover Nirvana's 'Smell Like Teen Spirit', or Fiona Apple swoon us with her rendition of 'Across The Uninverse' then you know just how gorgeous and painfully beautiful musical homages can be..

Adding to this list of unforseen appreciation for fellow musicians is newcomer, Birdy. At 0nly 15, her haunting yet soothing take on Phoenix's hit song '1901' is so damn good I almost cant listen to the original anymore. Its simply fascinating that the same lyrics of a dancey-pop-laden track can take on a whole new life when done up with a piano and female vocals.

Have a listen her stylings below, which includes a take on Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love.' And be sure to check out her debut self-titled folk album out now on Atlantic Records.

If you find yourself in Oklahoma City [for God's know's what reason] on New Years' Eve, then it turns out you will be in one of the less boring places on Earth given the fact The Flaming Lips are hosting a larger-than-life party bonzanza.

For the 5th time, Wayne & Co. are setting up shop to host a two-night massive "freakout" that promises to be anything but tame [and lame]. What do these crazy southerners have in store for you drunk bastards?

Besides having the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band appearing as special guests for both nights, the bash will give fans access to rare Lips projects including the now-infamous gummy fetusnew live albumThe Soft Bulletin: Live La Fantastique de Institution 2011 [quite a mouthful!], and their six-hour long song 'Found A Star On The Ground', which comes packaged on a USB drive in a light illusion toy called 'The Strobo Trip.' -- a device of his own twisted, trippy creation.

The party is going down at the Bricktown Events Center in the aforementioned city of their origin, and tickets are up for grabs at $100 a night, or $150 for both.

EVENT:

12/31 – Oklahoma City, OK @  Bricktown Events Center
01/01 – Oklahoma City, OK @  Bricktown Events Center

They are also playing a few days prior in Aspen, Colorado @ The Belly Up  if you happen to be in the area.

Here are a few tracks from The Flaming Lips LateNightTales compilation:

REVIEW: The Black Keys - El Camino [MUSIC]

11010907492?profile=original

The Black Keys are back with a brand new fast-paced, drive-hard soundtrack entitled El Camino. And personally, I couldn't be more pleased.

The always loud, yet often bluesy-rockers are reinventing that lo-fi sound they are famous for, by injecting more retro horsepower and few other surprises. With track titles like 'Nova Baby' [Likening it to a baby being born in the back of cherry-red Chevy] and 'Mind Eraser' you can bet your ass this is an album to be played at full volume, and top speed.

The opener, 'Lonely Boy' is exactly what you want to hear from these guys. Right out of the gate, we get a taste of a fast, furious beat--its the perfect track to crank while running from the fuzz.

We keep the beat, but lose the angst for the next track, 'Dead & Gone', which features some back-up vocals by some smooth soul singers. A bit of twinkle, and a whole lot of Hawaii Five-O type groove. A seemless transition as we work our way into the the body of the album.

'Gold On The Ceiling' can easily be compared to Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Higher Ground' [off Mother's Milk] It consists of a steady beat, backing guest vocals and consisten chorus lines. Not a throw-away track, but not the best so far. A toe-tapper at the least.

Giving us time to breathe, we break into the acoustic intro for, 'Little Black Submarines.' A very folky tune that exclaims 'everybody knows a broken heart is blind.' Which certainlyhas some truth value if you've ever been deserted. But half-way through, the sorrow-filled lyrics morph into a slightly more vigorous 'gettin-my-heart-back-together'-type jam. A nice touch. But be forewarned, if you listen to it a couple times, you might start to reminisce..

If  The Doors sat down with the Keys, we might end up with something that sounds like the next one: 'Money Maker.' Simple lyrics, pounding drums during the chorus hook, and a bit of seriously distorted harmonica make up the main elements here. Only thing missing is perhaps some organs. Coming in at under three-minutes for seemingly no reason other than they just decided to stop, this had much more promise if they kept at it.

Picking back up the reigns and giving it more juice, 'Run Right Back [To Her]' is another great hi-octane highway track. Certain to be a single off the album, although more reserved than 'Lonely Boy', it lends a better transition..excuse me, transmission into 'Sister.' A foot-stomping AC/DC meets Rolling Stones hybrid. Perhaps my favorite on here--you get a taste of classic post-disco Jagger with a whole lot of that Black Keys swagger.

'Hell Of A Season' ain't much to write home about. To be honest, it seemed forced. Its got a nice beat--sure, thats a given when dealing with the Keys, but it lacks heart. Nothing stands out as particularly catchy but then again, they can't all be winners.

Just when you think they can't go any more retro, 'Nova Baby' picks up where 'Stop, Stop' leaves off. Its got a little bit of Billy Jean in there both in context and in rhythm. Interestingly enough, you can hear those organs faintly adding depth in the background, which makes me wonder why they weren't utilized in 'Money Maker.' But still a great track about a girl not knowing what she wants, stepping on your heart and thusly wasting your time. I think we can all relate.

Wrapping up the album is 'Mind Eraser.' An equally retro jam with smooth guitars and swooning lyrics decrying 'don't let it be over' [exactly what I was thinking]. A fitting end, and I'm sure somewhat intentional.

THE BIG PICTURE:

One thing that is very apparent on this album in particular, is the lack of emphasis on intricate guitar work. If you look back at titles like 'Just Got To Be' and 'Thickfreakness' and compare them to this album you will notice the stark difference. But just the same, the boys worked hard on this and it comes through in spades. Taking a risk by departing from their normal comfort zone and trying their hands at a more retro approach to story-telling seems to work out. Their earlier work can sound a bit ostentatious to some, and repetitious to others, which was why this album was necessary. The fact they can develop an entire album without relying on the same old elements or over-the-top fret work shows maturation as a band and depth of character both in concept and the finished product.

If you are just starting out as a Black Keys fan, this is where you should start. Simplified, stripped-down hard rock at its best. By working backwards through their catalouge you're more likely to appreciate their older, much heavier material.

4 out of 5  stars

Iron & Wine Live On The Radio [MUSIC]

11010906292?profile=original

Sam Beam is a pretty soft-spoken guy. Which one might say makes him perfect for radio. Well, that's exactly what just happened. Iron & Wine--as he is better known--just released a vinyl-only record [for Record Store Day] of a set on Santa Monica's famous KCRW station.

If you are at all a fan of his music, you are very much aware of the potent imagery and magical use of metaphors that comprise his poetry. A stellar story-teller, Sam checked into KCRW and recorded an entire album worth of material spanning across nearly all his own studio releases. All done with 10-piece band.

Mixed in with the music are a few very insightful conversations with radio host Jason Bentley, who is also host of Morning Becomes Eclectic; a very impressive radio show featuring music and interviews from the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, David Lynch, Feist, Cut Copy, St. Vincent and many, many more..emphasis on many.

All of these studio recordings can be found and streamed HERE.

Compilations of these MBE Sessions [which feature The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead & Franz Ferdinand] can be hard to come by, but some are up for grabs on Amazon.  I was fortunate enough to locate a copy of the Iron & Wine vinyl and have included some rare live gems below. Full digital download can be found HERE.

ED visits University of Glamorgan

Radiohead guitarist Ed OBrien visited students at the University of Glamorgan this week to take part in a discussion on the music industry.

O’Brien appeared at the University’s Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries in his role as a board member of musician’s rights organisation the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC). He was joined by Jonny Dawson from the Music Managers Forum (MMF).

The guitarist shared his two decades of experience in the music industry with students from a variety of courses, including theFoundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship, BA (Hons)Popular Music, BA Music Technology and BSc (Hons) Sound Technology.

O’Brien touched on a range of topics from the importance of hard work and creativity to the role of music-related qualifications in the industry.

“I really wish I’d studied music,” said O’Brien. “The form is very important – it’s the building blocks of music. Understanding theory can really help get you where you want to be faster in song writing. But without spirit technical skill is nothing. Take that and put the spirit into it, and that’s what

makes music great.”

O’Brien was also keen to point out that the current climate of uncertainty and change could actually be of benefit to artists. “The music industry and the world in general are in a real state of flux at the moment. It’s a strange time and there are huge challenges ahead for everyone.” said O’Brien. “But it’s also a great time for creativity to flourish.”

The 43 year-old musician went on to take questions from students on topics including illegal downloading, the role of touring and the relevance of physical music formats such as vinyl and CDs.

After his appearance at the ATRiuM Campus, O’Brien went on to visit Cardiff’s famous Spillers Records store.

Principal Lecturer in Popular Music Dr Paul Carr worked closely with the Welsh Music Foundation, FAC and MMF to arrange the visit. “It was such a great privilege to have someone of Ed’s stature at the ATRiuM,” said Dr Carr, who is head of the school’s Music Academy initiative. “As a member of Radiohead, one of the most successful British bands to emerge over the last 20 years, he is in a unique position to offer invaluable advice not only to our students, but also to those of us who teach on music related programmes.”

Ed O’Brien has been named as one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists and played a key role in writing some of Radiohead’s biggest hits, including Street Spirit (Fade Out), Karma Police and Paranoid Android.

Wilco Stops To Talk To Flowers [MUSIC]

11010909895?profile=original

Record Store Day, [which is a legit, real thing] celebrates the importance and historical nature of local record shops and pay homage to these houses of cool LPs, rare releases, and employers of often overly prententious know-it-alls. But still, getting into the spirit of it all isn't all that hard considering that rare release element just mentioned.

...How rare you say?

Wilco, whose latest 'The Whole Love' is already in stores, is getting a 4-track limited record store-only vinyl supplement titled 'Speak Into The Rose' that includes two unreleased songs from the cutting room floor, and two alternate demos of songs 'I Might' and 'Art Of Almost'--perhaps the best songs on the album. The record hit indie record shops Friday and are in very limited supply.

If you were/are unable to procure the physical album, fear not. Head over HERE for a digital download of all 4 songs in perfect quality.

Tracklist:

1. Art of Almost (alternate)

2. I Might (demo)

3. Speak Into the Rose (unreleased)

More Amy Is Always A Good Thing [MUSIC]

In eager anticipation of her [new] album to be released oh-so-soon [12/6] I have just discovered two more gems from the album Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

The songs, titled 'Between The Cheats' & 'Halftime' are not anthems about fellow Brit Hugh Grant's infidelities or Janet Jackson's nip-slip. These soulful R&B ballads are just the right blend of classic Amy swagger and her unique vocal stylings.

Without futher ado...Ms. Amy Winehouse:

The Red Hot Chili Peppers  are on the move once more, taking the world one city at a time. Promoting their new album, 'I'm With You'--which they promise is not an Avril Lavigne cover album. But with Kiedis looking more and more like a brooklyn hipster 'Sk8r Boi' especially with the 'stache, you can never be too sure.

Nevertheless, the band's 10th studio album is the first without John Frusciante since 1995, and perhaps a fresh perspective was needed as they try to inject more of that youthful edge back into their sound. Something that was seriously lacking in their last couple attempts.  To help with this, they enlisted the help of long-time friend, Josh Klinghoffer, who John helped spread his rock wings.

Red Hot Chili Peppers 2011-2012 Tour Dates:
12/04 – Berlin, DE @ o2 World
12/05 – Munich, DE @ Olympiahalle
12/07 – Vienna, AT @ Wiener Stadthalle

More dates to come, and as an added bonus, RHCP are also offering digital downloads of their live performances abroad--so you can save those frequent flyer miles. Check out tracks off their record below and decide for yourself if they've recaptured that youthful vigor or they should take their tour bus ande give it away...give it away..give it away now.

i won't take myself too serious!

usually when i start writing something (more or less philosophical; but this time is less), i tend to become nihilistic, renegading my own specie or putting down an entire list of fucked up facts that i don't agree with. i don't want to do this tonight, boys , girls and undecided creatures from out of space! i would like to pretend that for some moments i actually live in my very own version of Lala-land, which is not necessary full of pink ponies with butterfly wings jumping around jelly and muffin castles. i try to keep it obscure and real, so i don't find myself one sunny day tied up in a mind relaxation establishment.

once i found myself in a dark depression, thinking that my life is rubbish, emotionless and the things that i love doing never got to be done. i thought that shit was more splendid that  i was, that my persona was as blank and powerless than untouched snow and i was colder (as a human being in relation with other brothers/sisters of specie) then snow. than my friends don't deserve being around such an ungrateful asshole as I, the writer. but the reason that i was such a dumpster of all crap human sentiments was because i was allowing myself to make a really big deal of the nothingness that was happening to me (which was the simple fact that i was alone and refuse to talk to anybody) and thought that the feeling of not feeling anything is never going to end. then i made a very stupid list, which was also a very pretty list of the very pretty things that i love about my life and about being a part of this planet, century, etc., etc. first were only the general things, like music, arts, places on the globe, ice cream, blah blah blah, but afterwards the list got personal, i started to feel stronger and i wasn't a stranger to myself anymore. (i'm not going to say what those things were, everybody has their own list.) i always thought lists are lame, especially when they are done to help you make a life or death decision. but in my case the lamest thing on Earth helped a lot. sometimes is good to want to have something tangible, so you won't be left only with "hm.. i wonder what's gonna happen next?".

we shouldn't take to much time of our days to think about the awfulness of this society. but ignorance is not an option ,either. we shouldn't become obsessive with the cruel history and preach everyday about it (people will find us boring and stay away from us). but we shouldn't pretend it didn't happen and continue the mistakes. we shouldn't accuse others for their faults and the consequences of them, forgetting about how it is to be human. but we can show others how the mending of things starts with recognizing our own mistakes. we shouldn't abandon our powers and live in adoration of gods that we can never reach and could never care less about our existence. those people we see on tv or about whom we read full of thirst are less powerful and less genuine then us and somewhere somehow are other things that we should start knowing about, because they're more interesting.

my fantasy of Lala-land is somewhere were laws are not against anybody, were everyone is living by the laws of the red cross, sharing possessions, cause they're all perishable and they don't worth dying for...something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b7qaSxuZUg. i know, a bit cheesy. but that's my Lala-land. if you don't like it, you can imagine your own...

it's an insane world we live in, let us not forget. but it's the only one we have (if we are not really big fans of fringe), so let us not make it worse then it already is. i try to go by the rules that i wrote in the 3rd paragraph, not only because it's a good way to be in society, but it's the best way to keep your minds all together. i try as well to sing less under the shower because i have a disturbing scary voice. so i let myself listening to good music. or i love watching films, but i figured that if more then 5 years pass i don't remember anything from the motion picture, but i remember the soundtrack. so i prefer books. to write sometimes, so that i won't forget what's happening in the story.

oh! yes! and weed is legal in my world...

love and affection, theBlub34.

PS: it's the best when you remember. it's the best when you forget.

PPS: i think i'll have a break of posting, but i'm sure my big fans won't start crying...
