OK Computer or Kid A?

I saw a comment on a youtube video in which a person made the observation that there are "OK Computer people" and "Kid A people". I thought it an interesting question.

Although I truly do like both of these records almost equally, I suppose it is also true that I enjoy one slightly more than the other.

Currently, I have to go with Kid A. But ask me again next week and that may all change.

How about you?

Annoyed By Presale Tickets

I was very happy to manage to get presale tickets for Thom Yorke in Usher Hall thinking it would sell out very quickly. Imagine my  extreme disappointment to  see standing and premium tickets available today as part of the general sale, whereas my fan presale  tickets are for the upper echelons of the theatre  Is it customary to get rid of the worst seats to true fans who are so desperate to get a ticket they purchase in  presale? Is this a new low in how ticketing companies treat fans.......

Right here

I haven't forgotten you

I did not run away

peek through history

smile through our mystery

I haven't forgotten you

I was far away

life has moved

but I'm right here

I haven't forgotten you

I see through the dark

a distance so far

eyes closed so stark

I haven't forgotten you

a look to the stars

a glance to the past

a memory of everlast

I just finished listening to my new Optimal pressing which I bought from an independent shop in the UK. The difference in quality is night and day as compared to the U.S. version pressed at Rainbo. I'm hearing elements in the music and a stunning presence which is completely missed in my original copy.

On my U.S. copy True Love Waits is marred by horrible noise in the quietest parts. And it is not limited to my copy. Others I have spoken to, and read on various music forums, have reported the same problem. But that is just the most obvious and egregious fault in the U.S. version.

I also picked up the blue vinyl version of OKNOTOK also pressed at Optimal. The two sides I have had occasion to listen to were also excellent. A little different than my 2008 Capitol reissue of OK Computer which is also a very good presentation.

In the future I am going to opt for the EU/UK versions. Europe always did a better job in pressing records, and in supplying proper protective inner sleeves, which properly cared for would last the listener a lifetime. Even great U.S. pressings were wrecked back in the day due to the use of cheap paper inner sleeves, often wrinkled, which created instant obsolescence and the need for some of us to try and find better copies.

No wonder the CD format was so enthusiastically embraced back in the '80s!

Oh well, enough of the complaining. I just wanted to report how happy I am to hear this great record as it was meant to be heard for the first time.

I strongly recommend the Optimal pressings for vinyl listeners in the U.S.

High, but not Dry...

Since I have not yet seen Radiohead I couldn't resist the opportunity to see the Friday show in Chicago. Ticketmaster is a mess. I got in right away on my desktop computer but did not get an option for "best available". Instead I saw a list of tickets like you will now if you go to the site. And of course it was defaulted to "least expensive". So I saw two tickets in the first row of section 307 at the $65 level. Looked great. Save a few dollars and see the entire floor and the stage from the front. Well, it didn't work out. I was clocking for ever, but they said they were securing my reservation.

Meanwhile I got through on my iPad. And it was going much quicker. Two seats appeared in the 14th row of section 334. I played the game of taking as much time as I could on each step while waiting for the other seats to be secured so I could proceed. Finally, I just grabbed the seats offered on my iPad.

Eventually, I simply clicked outside of the window that told me to "sit tight" and I lost the reservation. I suspect I never had the reservation.

So good news all around. I am going budget for Friday and I think I am close enough to the stage that it won't matter that I am up high. I will also get to check out how things look on the floor to plan out strategy for Saturday's show.

Looks like there are a few seats left so I trust all the true fans wanting to see the band in Chicago will be able to go.

By the way, I will be very surprised if Chicago gets another show. Looking at the North American schedule, it appears they play two shows in a row and have one night off. If they were to add two more in Chicago they would be looking at July 3 and 4th. Over a million people will be going to Grant Park for fireworks on the 3rd and I really doubt they would play on the 4th.

I Gathered Enough Pieces To Believe I Don't Love Yo

I loved the dog-ears of my favorite parts of you
rain washes the caked mud
off the lies you wore as your perception broke dreams

I was never any good at hide and seek
though the chessboard was always center-stage,
strategies of a game you swore to win
without ever sharing the rules

Rules were meant to be broken
is all I heard in the cloudy hum of shared space
tug of war in saltwater and discarded words

I tore images out of anyone who reminded me
of how beautiful you are
a kaleidoscope in pieces of you I couldn't keep

You bled volumes to the world
and spat articles through clenched teeth
at my blank pages now stained in your disdain

Running my finger across the memory
of a stone that crashed denial with hope
shaped like the lies you wore as your perception broke dreams

Rhythmic Edema

Speakers blare each time I go to speak
Drowned out by droning monologues
over heavy bass
pretending a heartbeat proves a life

Lost in machinery straining
to keep up with the lies
hiding behind strobe lights

Seizures blind muscles
bound by contract
to searing pain that screams
in rock and roll drumbeats

Banging inside the skull
housing hope whipped numb
in self pity and emptiness
Pretending to smile when nothing
shines through venta black
