So today I was bored and have always enjoyed singing a duet version of 'I Will' with my old roomate so I decided to make my own version (duet with myself... weird i know... its called overdub in the music community). SOOO if you get REALLY bored and want to check it out its at myspace.com/polstraproject . Note that it is merely a demo and my friend mike is actually working on guitar for it (as it only contains a baseline drums and some synthetic effects). be sure to let me know how bad it sucked!

After having a Myspace, Facebook, Jango, Imeem and now a W.A.S.T.E. profile... I'm not sure I know where to start to make this inherently "mine." Most of the stuff on the other sites have been... creative in some way, but there's only so much one can do with a profile -- especially when the author is severely lacking in cool java/css/etc. (Re: "whatever") skills... and I say this as I point towards myself.Clearly we all love Radiohead. I once wrote that I wasn't a huge fan of Amnesiac and that "Knives Out" was the only song I really enjoyed, and then I took another look at the lyrics (I was relating this to a friend and I simply couldn't say something without thoroughly understanding the possible repercussions of such a statement) and realized how much the lyrics did not match what the orchestration had said to me. If you're wondering, I didn't back down from the declaration I had made... I just augmented the context a bit to fit what I was trying to say about the song and album.In general... I don't know what I was getting at with that last paragraph. ha... Clearly it's time for me to call it a night.Adieu mes amis

Only around 60 percent of me is here, reactive and ready to respond to reality. Forty percent of me is lost to a dream, a fantasy where I'm walking around Brooklyn with fireworks in my eyes, where I'm always in between night and day, when the sun sets. That's a split second of where you can find me. I can't even register information. When I read the newspaper, the words are shut off from my eyes and I'm already off, walking alongside a riverbank, asking myself why beauty is always around me. Is this the glorious life? That I can open my eyes and still be stuck in a dream? That what echoes in my head is not second-hand knowledge but self-bred illusion? I can't judge. The moth burns itself against my lamp's bulb, and I watch it sputter in circles, body on its back, blinded just as I am. I'm skipping over boulders half my size and letting balloons go with my open fists. Humming in the streets of some urban city, make-believe ships arriving at the coast. When I see past the horizon, the endless waves pass over my mind, repeating, repeating, repeating. Ah, another life exists in me. I admit it. Am I this crazy to write this shit? aha. I guess so.

Mercury Prize Winners - Elbow

Congratulations to Elbow on winning the Mercury Prize. If anyone had to beat Radiohead, I'm glad it was them. 'Seldom Seen Kid' is a truly special album. Those who don't know it in UK may have heard it in the background of the Olympic and Paralympics coverage - 'On A Day Like This'Guy Garvey, who has a radio show which is broadcast on Sunday evenings on BBC6Music, and the rest of the band have waited a long time to be honoured in this way. They have been well liked and respected by fans, many other bands and critics for many years. Their recent tour proved them to be increasingly popular in the mainstream.I was lucky enough to see them play a blinding set in Germany prior to Sigur Ros and then Radiohead, and will be seeing them in London later this year. This may be Guy Garvey's Finest Hour!Well Done Elbow.

My head rests against the wall, and the window two inches next to me lets wind in like bats in attack. I look at the reflections the sun shapes, butterflies of light. You've seen them many times as patterns of leaves danced around our shadows. All I want to do is rest in pillows, sheets, and watch the direction of the sky. I feel clean, crisp, the closest Ive been to delicate. Now I await the melody of your voice to creep in, but I might have to end up imagining it. The worst thing to do would be to wait too long for the dates to wither, turning from pale green to piercing red. Inside, my soul grows older. How is this possible? My heart unable to absorb the colors around me. This is what I have to keep reminding myself of. That maybe the way you fidget with your skin-stretched fingers could brighten me. Because as I sit here now, it becomes harder to recognize the difference between me and my shadow. I could barely feel cotton's touch and whats worse is that I know I can and can't at the same time. Perhaps I should just stop thinking about worse things. They tug at my heart, but maybe that's the only way I know it is there...

In the past year, several restaurants, municipalities, natural food stores, and schools are deciding to "buy local" - choosing tap water rather than packaged products - for economic, environmental, or social justice reasons.Bottled water sold in most industrialized countries costs between $500 and $1,000 per cubic meter, compared to $0.50 for municipal water in states such as California, according to Pacific Institute President Peter Gleick. Meanwhile, more than 40 percent of water bottled in the United States comes from public water supplies, and studies suggest that bottled water is not always cleaner than tap water. The bottled products also demand significant amounts of energy to be produced, packaged, stored, and transported.While cities recycle about 23 percent of their plastic bottles, some 2 million tons of the bottles are sent to landfills each year, the Worldwatch Institute reported in 2007. Corporate Accountability International estimates that the annual cost of disposing of water bottles is $70 million.These concerns are beginning to cause a shift in consumer choices. Following the lead of U.S. cities such as San Francisco and Salt Lake City, the majority of the 250 mayors at the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors in June voted to phase out government use of bottled water when possible. Bans on selling bottled water at city functions are also being considered across Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, according to Deborah Lapidus, the national organizer for Corporate Accountability International's Think Outside the Bottle Campaign."Certainly the bottled water industry's growth is slowing down," Lapidus said. "The consumer market is being affected by the fact that cities are doing these visible water bottle cancellations."The U.S. bottled water industry's growth has declined for four years in a row. But Tom Lauria, vice president of communications for the International Bottled Water Association, said the advocacy campaigns are not the cause. "We have enjoyed meteoric growth in the past, but that's bound to level off," he said.Since its bottle campaign began in 2006, Corporate Accountability International estimates that at least 60 cities have phased out or reduced spending on bottled water, and at least 60 U.S. restaurants have committed to serving tap water in place of bottled water, according to Mark Hays, the campaign's senior researcher.The beverage industry is responding with increased lobbying efforts. When the U.S. Conference of Mayors began to consider discontinuing its bottled water contracts last year, the American Beverage Association and International Bottled Water Association joined the Mayors Business Council, according to the council's website. The paid membership grants industry representatives access to the conferences. "It's testament to our campaign and the bottled water movement... because the mayors have held firm and have not been influenced by this lobbying," Lapidus said.The U.K.-based Children's Food Campaign is accusing the British Softdrinks Association of perpetuating myths that tap water is unsafe. According to the campaign, schoolchildren have received educational materials that claim refilling empty water bottles from the tap is "unsafe" and "can lead to contamination." Lauria said the industry does not contend that tap water poses health risks. Rather, the leaflets likely referred to unhealthy bacteria that often accumulate inside water bottles if the vessels are improperly cleaned, he said.Corporate Accountability International has also been pressuring beverage companies Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestle to disclose the sources and quality of their water. Last year, Pepsi announced that the label on its water product, Aquafina, would reveal that it originates mostly from purified, public water sources.Beverage companies are responding positively to some environmental concerns. Coca-Cola announced last year that it would put smaller caps on plastic bottles that are 24 ounces or smaller. The new cap allowed Coke to reduce its plastic intake by more than 1.8 million kilograms last year, and plastic reduction is expected to rise to at least 18 million kilograms by the end of 2008. The company also plans to recover 90 percent of its production waste and improve its water use ratio, according to its Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report.Global consumption of bottled water reached nearly 189 billion liters last year alone - a 7.6 percent increase from 2002 - led by growing demand in China. The United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and Italy lead the world in per capita consumption, according to the beverage marketing data.It is heartening to see that word is spreading and people are reacting accordingly!
