Star

I am a star. Brilliant, empty,
A hole in the sky. A shred, a peg,
A tear in the black bedsheet.

My light gives shine, not vision,
No lit space precedes me. No comfort
Rests here for the seeking. No,

I am distant, not sustaining.
More questions in me
Than answers. You are all still damned.

And yet, you love me, you love me,
You long for me, gaze on me.
To love what cannot know you,

To ache for a pitiless silence,
To kneel in pain to severity -
What hell on earth is this,

Or what great gift?
