OFFsetting your CARBON FOOTPRINT

hi all - so this is the time of year when we reflect back... And I do 'reflecting' by going through my calendar and logging in all my flights into http://www.carbonfund.org/ - and more specifically into this: http://www.carbonfund.org/Calculators#Home

You can specify all flights, mark the box that says 'round trip' (if applies) and the box that says 'include radiative forcing' - and it will give you a dollar amount. You can do the same with car/bus/train travel, utilities etc....  I did all of it, and I have to say, relative to my flights - I have basically no footprint. I offset the flights, I'd rather not fly at all, but I cannot avoid it. So at least offsetting it is better than not. And it is tax-deductible for those of you who care. try it, it will make you feel just a little .. greener, and, importantly, it will hopefully make a difference. You can specify what you want to be done with these $$. Those of you who already bought various Radiohead tickets that involves traveling a significant distance - I recommend you consider it  ;-)  It's not that much actually - for example, a roundtrip between East Coast US and Europe run around $35. New York to Toronto is less than $4 if you can believe it. New York to Miami is about $11.

I'm beyond despondent now, some Republican speaker said people would rather be on unemployment insurance benefits rather than work.

This person living, prospering and enjoying the benefits of the hard work of the American taxpayer is terribly

out of touch with the people who prop his career and allow him to have his postion.

These are fighting words, You can't say shit like that man.  This is just wrong on so many levels.

I'm so mad today...i just cant say what I would do if i saw this person...Do you know what "fighting words" are?

Shut up already!

Ash, Second Part

The big chandelier was the witness of that emotive scene.
I kiss her cheek and go, but she holds my hand and does not let me.
I turn back and look at her, her eyes were sad and melancholic but they turn in anger and hatred.

So my massacre begin, the only witness of the beating i received was the big chandelier hanging upon us.
Somehow, finally I get in the middle of the street bloodstained.

She gets a big mallet and smash my genitals.
She knows I'm still conscious and the last I remember is the big mallet against my face.

I grew yellow, green, fresh.

pressure cooked and fading

I burst

the most vulnerable parts of my heart exposed

A Day Spent Under The Covers: Pt. II [MUSIC]

Having way too much music to fit into one post is never a bad thing...unless the music itself is bad. Not the case here! Round two of stellar female cover songs is underway. Wrapping their sexy voices around some of the most random songs include Alison Mosshart of The Kills taking on the raspy Louis Armstrong; Zooey Deschanel of She & Him taking a shot at The Smiths, and The Bamboos featuing Megan Washington giving a new go-go spin to the Kings Of Leon.

DOWNLOAD:

Alison Mosshart - What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong Cover)

Amy Winehouse - All My Lovin' (Beatles Cover) (BBC Sessions)

Amy Millan - I Will Follow You Into The Dark (Death Cab For Cutie Cover)

Kaki King - Close To Me (The Cure Cover)

The Bamboos - King Of The Rodeo (Kings Of Leon Cover)

She & Him - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths Cover)

Also up for honorable mention, but sadly did make the cut due to attachment size issues are:

Tennis - Tell Her No (Zombies Cover)

Katy Perry - Electric Feel (MGMT Cover)

Birdy - 1901 (Phoenix Cover) **see my older post about this one**

There is absolutely no refuting the new surge of female rockers and singers these days. Certainly more than yesteryear. All for it. And one of the best features of this new [equal opportunity] age of music is the re-imagining of songs that have previously only been sung by those with an overwhelming amount of testosterone.

Enclosed is part uno of a collection of cover songs by some of today's leading ladies, including Mr. Little Jeans, Oh Land and Steffaloo. Also getting in on the action is Birdy, Alex Winston and the Dum Dum Girls.

Seattle Bans Plastic Bags, and Sets a Charge for Paper

SEATTLE — The City Council here voted unanimously on Monday to ban plastic grocery bags and charge a 5-cent fee on paper bags — and this time city leaders hope the ban actually takes effect.

Jim Bates/The Seattle Times, via Associated Press

Emma Klein, left, and Jake Harris brought theater to their testimony at a hearing on the plastic bag ban in Seattle this month.

Three years ago, Seattle city officials became the first in the nation to approve a fee on paper and plastic bags, instituting a charge of 20 cents for each bag provided by many retail stores. The idea was to create a financial incentive to reduce pollution: the fee was supposed to prompt people to bring reusable bags with them to shop.

But before the 2008 fee took effect, the plastic-bag industry led a petition drive that forced the issue onto a citywide ballot. In August 2009, in the midst of the recession and after the industry spent $1.4 million on the campaign, Seattle voters rejected the fee.

“Twenty cents felt kind of punitive, especially for low-income folks,” said Mike O’Brien, a council member whose committee introduced the current bill.

Instead of becoming a leader on the issue, Seattle watched as other cities moved forward with bans and fees.

“There’s a competitive side to seeing who can come up with the most progressive legislation,” said Mr. O’Brien, who was a local Sierra Club leader, and a candidate for the Council, when the bag fee was on the ballot.

Now Seattle is the fourth city in the state to approve a ban, modeling its measure closely on one approved this year in Bellingham. Some larger cities, including San Francisco, Washington and Portland, Ore., have also instituted bans and fees. But plenty of places are still wrestling with the subject. In Los Angeles, the City Council has studied the issue for four years.

Arguments persist about the environmental drawbacks and benefits of each type of bag. Mr. O’Brien said one reason the Council was allowing paper bags was because the city has one of the highest rates in the nation for paper bag recycling, about 85 percent, while it recycles only about 13 percent of the 292 million plastic bags distributed in the city. Under the ban, plastic bags could still be provided for produce and bulk grocery items.

Many of the area’s largest grocers and retailers support the new measure. But it is opposed by the plastic bag industry. An industry spokesman said Monday that it had not decided whether it would try to put the measure before voters yet again.

Mark Daniels, vice president of sustainability and environmental policy for Hilex Poly, a plastics maker and recycler, said bans were “badly misguided efforts.”

He added, “Moving consumers away from plastic bags only pushes people to less environmentally friendly options such as paper bags, which require more energy to produce and transport, and reusable bags, which are not recyclable.”

Arcade Fire has a new interactive video for their indie dance track 'Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)' and it is EPIC! Not only do your dance moves work the video in practically any way your mind can imagine, but it changes depending on how well you can work it..thus providing an endless amount of fun as you hone your skills for that New Year party you wont shut up about. Who needs the Black Eyed Peas Experience video game when you have the ethereal Regine Chassagne helping you out??

Don't have a webcam to back you up? Lack of limbs? The video is still somewhat engaging if you at least have fingers. You can guide the video along, altering the visuals by clicking and dragging various parts of the screen.

More good news abounds! The video features an updated version of the song with an extended intro. Much better if you ask me. You can grab it below.
