Democracy In Honduras

I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the Delahunt-Serrano-McGovern House resolution 630 condemning the June 28 military coup in Honduras, led by graduates of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) ( formally called the School of the Americas). It is critical that Congress be crystal clear that coups are unacceptable. In a time when we are trying to improve our image in the world we must take definitive actions to show the world we will no longer support U.S. trained military leaders to instigate coups against democratically elected officals.A very small sample of record of our bloody support for opposing democracy include the replacing Iran's elected Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeq that gave us the brutal dictator Shah Pahlavi, the overthrow in 1954 Guatemala’s Pres. Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán, that led to decades of military rule , and infamous overthrow of Chile's President Allende that gave us Pinochet and his bloody repression and "the Disappeared".How can we hypocritically call for democracy in Iran and allow this school of repression and subversion to continue? For any credibility in the world we must back up our words with action.Despite claims that the US government has cut its military ties with the Honduran military coup regime, WHINSEC continues to train Honduran soldiers. For this and its long, dark history of torture, violence against civilians and impunity, I urge you to also condemn the SOA-WHINSEC and join the 42 Representatives who are already calling for the suspension of its operations and for an investigation into the connection between U.S. foreign military training and human rights abuses In Latin America by co-sponsoring the Latin America Military Training Review Act, HR 2567.To sign on to the Delahunt-Serrano-McGovern House resolution 630, please contact Cliff Stammerman or Ben Dailey in Congressman Delahunt's office at (202) 226- 6434. To co-sponsor HR 2567, please contact Cindy Buhl in Congressman McGovern's office. Thank you for your time and your efforts in support of human rights. Background on School of Americas WHINSEC : http://www.soaw.org/site/faq.phpDemocracy in Action letter site :http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/727/t/3823/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=27691Folks: if you do not wish to receive political commentary or commentary about patient rights please notify by message and I'll do my best to not bother you.Bronson
