Radiohead are making progress in the studio. The band started recording this past Winter and are currently in the studio working on the last bits. Ed O’Brien said it will be a matter of weeks till it’s finished and hopes to see the release before the end of this year. ‘It has got to. I hope so’

Guitarist Ed O’Brien was a guest on Adam Buxton’s show on BBC 6 Music today, saying he thinks the new Radiohead record ‘is the best record we’ve ever made’.

Ed: “We’re in the heart of the record. It’s genuinely exciting. It’s very different from what we did last time. It’s really nice to be doing this. It’s so good to be making music with the band that you feel is still as good as it’s ever been.”

When Adam Buxton asked if he had any idea when this record would see the light of day,

Ed answered: “No, Ideally it would be greatif it came out sometime this year. It has got to. I hope so. We’re at the finishing line. When you’re making a record, a film, write a book for ages and ages you think the finishing line is miles away. Now it feels it’s in touching distance. But of course, it being a creative process, at the last bit also, you have bursts of energy, you achieve a lot of things in a small period of time and then you’re nearly there…it might slow down. But yeah, hopefully it will be a matter of weeks.”

With ‘In Rainbows’ you seemed to have turned a corner and having a lot more fun. That’s what it looked like from the outside looking in. Is that fair?

Ed O’Brien: It wasn’t fun making the record. Making records has been hard. It’s always been a slog. Traditionally Radiohead in a studio has been: Don your tin helmet, just see it out, like a war of attrition. And basically at the end of In Rainbows it had taken three years to sort of come together. And we initially started off on our own, pulled in someone else and after a year we worked with Nigel [Godrich] again. It was such a slog. We knew we had these songs. We really believed in these songs. So, we had to do it right. It just took a long time. And we basically decided then and there at the end of that record: ‘We are never doing this again this way’. That was kind of like the end of Radiohead, mark 2. We decided, the only way that worked for us to carry on was to do it in a different spirit. Enjoy it.

On the recording process of ‘In Rainbows’ Ed continued explaining why it was much harder than everybody thought.

Ed: “We hear it all the time: ‘it sounds like you had a great time in the studio’. But, oh man… that [In Rainbows] was a slog. It was a really long process. At the end, for instance a song like ‘House Of Cards’ has been recorded six times. Plus the fact: we had this genius idea in 2006 to go on tour and do 50 odd shows, play all these songs, go back to studio and record them. And that’s when we went back in with Nigel. We went in and recorded them having played these songs 50 times. So we kind of got the arrangements sorted. We just wanted to get them down. We played these enough. And we got them down and most of them were rubbish. A lot of work in the creative process is rubbish.

However Ed praised producer Nigel Godrich for his influence on the band.

Ed:“The art is to not give in, to carry on, persevere. You just have to keep going. The great thing about Nigel is; he raises the bar. He drives you hard. You think you’ve done the take, you think you’ve done your overdub, you think it’s in there and then he says: ‘Maybe one more time’. He gets the best performances out of you. He’s amazing. Cause he also drives himself really hard as well. The quality of the stuff that he does is really high. So, it’s good to be driven hard.”

I'm excited!

Acording The King of Limbs Part 2

In a recent interview with  Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, he reveals that the band will tour next year and that he is working on solo material.

A small bit of very interesting information this morning sent directly by the talented (and very friendly) photographer Samuel Dietz, longtime fan and always well informed, you can admire the work on the site lost-pixel:

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien announced a tour for 2012! “” We’ll play these songs on stage, we reserve the dates at this time “” he said in an exclusive interview to appear soon on Argentine Al Tun Tun: http://alltuntun.wordpress.com/ and in association with www.lost-pixel.net.

O’Brien also thinking of a solo album “I’m writing songs,” he added.

More information soon.

With seven studio albums with his band and one solo album, the ‘diminutive in size but monumental in status’ singer took to stage in front of a capacity crowd.

Playing at least one song from each album (excluding, Pablo Honey), the Oxford legend began with three tracks from The Eraser, his 2006 solo album. Self titled ‘The Eraser’ kicked things off before Global Warming warning ‘The Clock’. The “angriest song I’ve ever written”, ‘Harrowdown Hill’, about the death of scientist David Kelly followed before Radiohead tracks old and new.

The old came in the form of The Bends opener ‘Planet Telex’ stripped down to a piano and vocals only performance. Amnesiac’s ‘I Might Be Wrong’ and ‘Everything In It’s Right Place’ from Kid A were given an incredible welcome from an awestruck crowd, as was ‘The Gloaming’ from Hail To The Thief.

Smoke swept across the stage as ‘Reckoner’ brought the set bang up to date before Thom started looping a vocal of “Don’t Hurt Me” through an acoustic driven track. The hushed silence meant only one thing, confirmed by the singer, “That was a new Radiohead song”. Six words to warm the hearts of music fans the world over.

The audience was sent back in time to 1997 with the closer, an incredible acoustic version of ‘Airbag’ from OK Computer.

As Thom Yorke left the stage, a mass of happy smiley faces contemplated what is easily one of the highlights of this festival year.

HOLLYWOOD?!?!?!?!?

part I

Ok… so…
So this is BY FAR the craziest thing I’ve done in my life. I ruled out this gig as an absolute impossibility. I did not even consider. I have spent silly amounts of money to do Mexico and Prague – but this was something I procrastinated over and planned for months… it’s not just about $$; the amount of air-travel is obscene – even though I did offset my CO2 footprint for ALL MY FLIGHTS for 2009 – but that’s still a lame excuse. Astronomical amount of time wasted traveling – and by virtue of my job… it is costing me dearly… so I said – OK, this ticket will cost 4 figures, and the only way I can EVEN CONSIDER bidding – because it IS a one of a kind thing, and because the cash is going to a NOBLE CAUSE – IS if it were here, in New York, on the ‘correct’ coast. And I already donated A LOT to Haiti. And I participated in Formengr’ fundraiser to get the taper into the venue AT A SIGNIFICANT level :-))) In fact, I sweated thru this auction as if I was a part of it and was wiped out at the end. When … minutes after it ended at 2PM EST, my friend in LA told me that her bottom level (450?) bid got in (!!) And that she is uncertain what to do with her 2nd ticket. AAHH!! Ok, let’s just say: $450 is something that fucking scalpers charge for ANY Radiohead gig. Every time. If this is what an event LIKE THIS cost me back home – I’d consider it FREE. But – this was in LA. Tomorrow. I seriously considered turning off the internet. Except instead, I asked Formengr if he’d buy the ticket, god knows I REALLY wanted him to get in. And he said he couldn’t make it. So repeating to myself “inez, what the fuck are you even thinking?” sitting in New York at 3PM in my PJs in front of the computer in cold sweat and shaking. I clicked on Travelocity and saw a …….$186 roundtrip NY-LA leaving at 7:10PM. I thought I put in wrong date or wrong location ------ SO ----- ..the rest is more or less a blur. I called my LA friend, told her I have no fucking idea what my dirty mind is thinking, or where I am staying and what my name is, but I AM doing it. And booked the flight. I emailed a dear friend in Europe because I felt like a fucking criminal and that she was supposed to be there. I remember looking for a bag, and the camera charger, and contact lenses and dropping things on the floor a lot (I have no clue what clothes are in my bag in the overhead compartment now). I jammed my printer. I had 1 hr to get my ass out of the house. I realized that I had a total of $4 in cash and had to leave even earlier to get to the cash machine. I called my ‘other’ and asked if he considers me clinically insane. He… he found me a hotel in the next 5 min – 3 blocks from the venue (he may still consider me insane…). And then I was in a cab, close to passing out, so that the cabby asked me if someone’s cat has died :-) and I told him THE WHOLE STORY (you see, I was really out of it by then) - and he said I was doing the right thing! It was gloriously clear outside, and almost no traffic. JFK was the mellowest I’ve seen it in years and I ended up arriving so early that I actually managed to have breakfast-lunch-dinner or whatever the first meal of the day would have been in any random time zone. Even though I wasn’t hungry at all – to avoid headaches… Can’t remember what I ate. I spoke with my LA friend again and she said that she would actually pick me up (!!!!!!) at LAX (Thank you dear!). This was like a movie … A dream of some sort. They boarded the plane early - it was barely 1/3 full. They let me get on and off the plane and back on to re-check to a better seat and gave me a full row, ‘cause it was so empty. We pulled away from the gate early. I realized that my arrival’s late enough in the PM and my hotel may cancel my reservation, so I punched on my stupid barely-txt-compatible phone ‘pls tell hotel im lat’ (there was no time for an ‘e’) as we were accelerating on the runway and hit SEND when we were about 10ft above the ground. And did not get arrested. IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?

Just had an idea...

what if we did a buddy system, where 1 person sleeps for 30 minutes, while the other watches, and switches duty every 30 minutes, then whenever the ticket goes on sale, the person awake calls the person asleep?

huh? huh? ... there's the whole -give your number to a complete stranger thing though....

W.A.S.T.E. App for Berlin

We are trying out a new app at the Berlin show tonight and tomorrow. It will allow you to watch the live cameras on your smart phone. It only works while you are at the gig, and connected to the Radiohead wifi network.

Currently we only have the iOS version working. Go to the App store and search for StageCam, and help us test the system,

There is no future.                                                    11010926654?profile=original

We have evicted ourselves from our own cities, rendered our agriculture poisonous, criminalized the poor, aggrandized the rich, honored the stupid and ridiculed the intelligent…

I have no solutions, no wisdom to offer…Whilst Rome burns, I take up my little chisel and I carve a panoramic apocalypse of my own…and if you want to see it, you’re more than welcome.
