2009 --The Best In Music.

The music industry has continued to slowly adapt to this new digital-era of music which has presented itself to be a challenge both to the record labels as well as the artists themselves. Despite this, it's still has been a good year for music. Musicians everywhere have relied on the word-of-mouth bloggesphere to create enough buzz that will land them on some listener's iPod next time they decide to take a break from watching Mad Men or playing guitar hero. This is the times we live in. With bands such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart having plenty of buzz at the start of this year while other bands like XX ended the year with plenty of buzz of their own. Established artists saw the release of new albums while other bands took breaks from their own collective groups to create what is now becoming a new trend in these new so-called "super-groups". As far as the decade goes, the way I see it, it began with Kid A and ended with Merriweather Post Pavilion, two key albums that will forever be linked to the 00s. In looking forward to next year and into the next decade, one can only imagine what directions music will take and what steps the music industry will need to take in oder to continue to make profits from legitimate and talented artists and not have to rely so much on just another manufactured one-hit wonder "rock band". With that being said, here are the lists of favorite albums and songs of the year, albums of the decade and even a favorite MJ songs list as a way of paying tribute to the man's legacy. In hoping Nickelback finally goes away in the coming decade, happy new year everybody!-SSAY2K9 ALBUMS:[50] Passion Pitt - MannersKey tracks: "Little Secrets" & "The Reeling"[49] Peter Bjorn & John - Living ThingKey tracks: "If It Don't Move Me" & "Nothing To Worry About"[48] Handsome Furs - Face ControlKey tracks: "Legal Tender" & "I'm Confused"[47] jj - n° 2Key tracks: "Things Will Never Be The Same Again" & "Ecstasy"[46] Sonic Youth - The EternalKey tracks: "Antenna" & "Sacred Trickster"[45] Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague LoversKey tracks: "Peeled Apples" & "Journal For Plague Lovers"[44] Islands - VapoursKey tracks: "Switched On" & "Vapours"[43] M. Yes folks, this is the news we all await for and it is now a reality. Be excited... Be very excited.

Best news ever!!... [Via--Ateaseweb.com]There’s been a lot of speculation on Radiohead’s next album. Would it ever be recorded? Or would be just get digital tracks, EP’s or whatever made the press. Ed O’Brien confirmed that a new Radiohead album (yes, album) is in the making. It was the interview in The Believer that kick-started a lot of rumours on Radiohead’s future. Thom Yorke told the magazine: “None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again.(…) But we’ve all said that we can’t possibly dive into that again. It’ll kill us.” The news hit the press worldwide.Radiohead have spent this Summer in the studio, releasing tracks online like ‘Harry Patch (In Memory Of)’ and ‘These Are My Twisted Words’. This sort of seemed like they were serious about not releasing albums in the future. But guitarist Ed O’Brien has confirmed that the band is in fact interested in recording more albums and the follow-up to ‘In Rainbows’ is actually in the making.Ed O’Brien told NME that with sessions planned this winter the band would “definitely” be releasing a full album physically next year. “We were misquoted,” claimed O’Brien of Yorke’s comments, loudly adding, “WE WILL BE MAKING AN ALBUM!” Although he said the band hadn’t decided how it would be released, he said the album would come out on vinyl and CD whether it first arrived as a download or not.“We love the artwork; that’s really important, the physicality,” he explanied. “And we all like vinyl. That’s not going to go away. I still like CDs as well. I got the Speech Debelle CD the other day – I nearly downloaded it from iTunes but I thought, ‘No. I want the physical thing.’”O’Brien wouldn’t be drawn on specific tracks, but suggested that recent free download ‘There Are My Twisted Words’ was not a marker for the album. On releasing ‘These Are My Twisted Words’ online he said: “It’s a kind of one-off. It could have been a darker side of ‘In Rainbows’ – it’s got that autumnal vibe, we’re leaving the summer and going into the darkness.”He added that with Radiohead set to reconvene in their Oxfordshire studio this winter, the season might similarly affect the new songs. “Typical Radiohead,” he laughed. “We’re going into the studio in winter. It’s always miserable! Are we at the whim of the seasons? We are! When you’re in a studio in the countryside, the music you make is definitely affected by what season it is.”

Michael Jackson (1958 - 2009) R.I.P.From Los Angeles Times:[Updated at 3:15 p.m.: Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times.][Updated at 2:46 p.m.: Jackson is in a coma and his family is arriving at his bedside, a law enforcement source told The Times.Jackson was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home at 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda told The Times.[Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home in the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson had rented the Bel-Air home for $100,000 a month. It was described as a French chateau estate built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater. The home is about 2 1/2 miles, about a six-minute drive, from UCLA Medical Center. An earlier version of this post incorrectly described the time to travel between the home and hospital as two minutes.]The news comes as Jackson, 50, was attempting a comeback after years of tabloid headlines, most notably his trial and acquittal on child molestation charges. In May, The Times reported that Jackson had rented the Bel-Air residence and was rehearsing for a series of 50 sold-out shows in London's O2 Arena. Jackson had won the backing of two billionaires to get the so-called "King of Pop" back on stage. His backers envision the shows at AEG's O2 as an audition for a career rebirth that could ultimately encompass a three-year world tour, a new album, movies, a Graceland-like museum, musical revues in Las Vegas and Macau, and even a "Thriller" casino. Such a rebound could wipe out Jackson's massive debt.—Andrew Blankstein and Phil Willon

Mathematics and Climate

The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announce that the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2009, is Mathematics and Climate. One of the most important challenges of our time is modeling global climate. Some of the fundamental questions researchers are currently addressing are:How long will the summer Arctic sea ice pack survive? Are hurricanes and other severe weather events getting stronger? How much will sea level rise as ice sheets melt? How do human activities affect climate change? How is global climate monitored?Calculus, differential equations, numerical analysis, probability, and statistics are just some of the areas of mathematics used to understand the oceans, atmosphere, and polar ice caps, and the complex interactions among these vast systems. Indeed, analyzing feedback effects is a crucial component of global climate modeling and often a significant factor in long-term predictions. For example, warmer temperatures cause ice to melt, exposing more land and water, so that more sunlight is absorbed-instead of being reflected, in turn leading to more warming.Mathematics, computer science, and other sciences are inextricably linked, and each is required to begin to solve the fundamental questions about earth's climate, particularly those concerning global warming. Moreover, math and science are central to the development of both traditional and alternative energy sources, and to the evolution of other strategies for mitigating the effects of climate change.Resources for this year's Mathematics Awareness Month program can be found at www.mathaware.org.Each year the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics sponsors Mathematics Awareness Month to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in one particular area.

Lights Out for Earth

Please join the City of Atlanta and 200 other cities around the world in this year's "Lights Out" event on March 28, 2009. The event is intended to send a message to world leaders about the need to reduce emissions and curb global warming. If you live on the U.S. eastern seaboard, please turn off your lights and all other electronics from 8:30 to 9:30 PM EST. This year's event is predicted to be the largest planned power outage in history. Atlanta will go dark from it's power stations, but if your city is not cutting power, please support this event and turn off your lights and electronics on your own.The event will begin at 8 p.m. local time in Christchurch, New Zealand, and flow through 14 time zones, concluding in San Francisco, where the lights on the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges will turn off along with all other non-essential lighting.Skylines will go dark in Suva, Fiji, and Calgary as well as Atlanta. Major league sports arenas will dim their lights in Phoenix.
