LOWERING THE (RING) TONE

hello, my lovely, w-a-s-t-e-rsbeen keeping a low profile since the cat tried to have me whacked. the problem with the open university is that it best suits motivated, mature hard-working types who can hold down a full-time job and study hard. that'll be me fucked, then...so, between drinking, crying and occasional study, work at the death star has taken up pretty much the rest of my time. yuck.oh! that reminds me!regular readers (who now amount to maybe several! whoop!) will be aware of my weirdo love colleagues. pass me the sick bucket while we wait for the newcomers to check out.seriously, go on. i'll wait...anyway, i was walking back from the loo last week when one of the lovers (who had never said a word to me up to the point) came up to me and grabbed my crotch, uttering the immortal words;"i'm hannah, and i want you to get in the disabled toilet with me!"what can i say? obviously, those of you who've checked out my photos will know i'm scotland's answer to denzel washington, but wtf??? as the best british tabloid reporters are wont to say, i made my excuses and left."hannah" (if that is even her real name...) then carried on as normal for the rest of the shift, playing at lover-girl with her boyfriend. except, every time she stroked his hair, she'd look over his shoulder at me and wink, or blow kisses. fucking psycho. the disabled toilets!what if a disabled person had needed to use them? oh, the humanity!not much else has happened. just came back from a friend's house. she's a qualified masseuse and gives me the whole aromatherapy / holistic job once a month. i've been having back and rib (the cat, again) trouble, so she was pummeling away at my left-sided sciatic nerve when i was overcome with the desire to break wind.look, i really didn't want to mention farting but, you know where this is going...ever the gentleman, i endured real pain holding in the wind. by this time, my stomach was making sounds like a coffee percolator; blubplup, blubplup, whisssssh. you get the picture. anyway, my mate was all;"you seem very tense, i'll just apply some pressure here..."you can probably guess what happened next. if you've ever heard an ocean liner, you'll know for certain. i swear, the curtains at the other end of the room billowed for about a minute and my friend made a face like kenneth williams in "carry on doctor"you know the face - "ooooohhhh, matron! take it away"let's just say, it's a good thing she's into essential oil burners and candles. hope it's dissipated before next month's appointment.why am i revealing such horrific details to you all? that's the real issue on my mind right now.it's because i love you all. each and every one.much love, steve x.

Totally surprised the wife with a trip downtown to see Swell Season. These are the folks from the movie"Once".They also received an Oscar at this years Academy Awards for best song.We started out the night at Pooles Diner, which is a spin-off of Enoteca Vin.Ashley Christianson is owner chef. The food was very good especially the Buttermilk Fried Shrimp w/ Local Frise on Sunburst Tomatoes. An Arugula Salad w/ Grapefruit Avocado and a light and creamy Buttermilk Dressing followed.i had Pan Roasted Poisson & Mashed Potatoes while Lorrie had Seared Halibut w/ Tomato Jus.LiCIOUS!!!The show started promptly at 9pm with Glen Taking the stage solo and doing an acoustic number all while testing out the halls acoustics.(Best Place in NC to see a live show)Marketa joined him for the next number and they ran through a bunch of songs off there debut album as well as the movie. They did cover a Pixiessong which I did not know. There tour manager came out and played a Steve Earl song, which was fantastic. The evening came to an end with a Van Morrison cover and won last Swell Season song. They were backed all night by three members of Glens main band The Frames. All in all a very good Irish type of night!

What did I do today?!Woke up at 12:30 ISHHHH and skipped breakfast. Probably mulled around for a bit.Went to check with the financial aid people to find out how to get all kinds of moneyas it was 2 o clock and i hadn't eaten in nearly 180 hours, I bought some chipotle. didn't fill me up. I feel like something awkward happened while I was there but I can't remember what. Ate my rito in the steaming shade.OH YEAH HORRIBLE BUS ADVENTURE. It was bad. Three hour excursion to buy an external hard drive. I accidently wound up at Pixar studios briefly. Attn: fat bus driver lady on the FS line - you're a dick.I did some other shit or something and wound up going to a concert at Zellerbach for free. Missy Higgins, Mason Jennings, and Brett Dennon. It was disgustingly chill and mostly acoustic, but not necessarily bad. Not that acoustic is bad. I use disgusting a lot to describe things I like, which I should stop. BASICALLY, it was the kind of music I wouldn't have minded drinking expensive beer to. Also, lots, like, LOTS, of very pretty women, all in summer clothes (in the cool of the evening light).DC++ing like a maniac now. Who am I writing to? OOOOH this creepy uke Portishead song just came on, it uses an ukelele. It belongs in a playlist. That Portishead chick sings too much about "self doubt." She's got too much money for that. The dude next to me is cracking his toes with his hands.

the concert

It was absolutely great; worth the long wait. The sheer fact that i heard weird fishes/arpeggi, reckoner, you and whose army?, there there and pyramid song all in a 2 hour period makes me happy beyond belief.I was not expecting My Iron Lung, the bass line is so sexy. And when Thom was playing drums in Bangers and Mash, they way he moved was such like a go-go, i could not help but laugh all the time. Loved it.The only negative was my seat. It was too much to the left and I could not see the video well. Also i could not see much of Phil or Colin which is annoying. One last thing: I don't understand why do ppl have to come and go at all times. I mean, they're playing Idioteque or Exit Music and the girls in front went out to get nachos w/ cheese! Who the hell eats at a concert?Other than that, I had an excellent evening.

So in the Summer of 2001

I was heavy into my Radiohead fandom around that time. Heading into my last semester, I heard they were gonna tour Chi-town that year. I rallied the troops and sent word that a concert attendance must be had. Welp, after standing in line for a couple of hours at the Ticketmaster outlet in Manhattan, they opened the window up. After about 30 seconds the show sold out. I double checked and Ohio tickets were still available but nobody wanted to go. I wasn't seeing Radiohead. I made a vow to myself right there, that I would see them before I die.So tomorrow it will happen.I reinstalled my linux laptop and updated the software. The new camera's batteries are charged. I printed out maps to places I want to see on the way (Booche's in Columbia look out). I have the rest of the week off of work. I've had a couple of beers. Most importantly, I have my ticket (well and the car that's gonna take me there). After all of this build up, I'm just not excited. Not yet. Maybe it's the toil of preparation or maybe I'm just tired from a hard day's work or maybe I'm saving my anxiety for the show tomorrow. At any rate, a dream going on 7 years will come true tomorrow. I hope tomorrow alot of dreams will come true for others. At the least, I hope we will get to enjoy the experience and I hope to meet some of you out there.Until then, have a good night. I'm going to have ONE more beer.....

in less than 24 hours!!!

i am packing to go to the concert. steven continues to make fun because i am so concentrated into this.i've had dreams where the band does not play reckoner nor arpeggi.that is so silly, but still it has happened twice this week; my brain must be melting.although i am excited about the concert it comes at the worst time. i leave for italy next week and have tons of things to do: proofread for the 20th time my paper for the conference, pack, practice the paper delivery...ok, i'll just go and do some yoga to try to quiet my mind a little.

In Bruges

Not at all what I expected and all the better for it. Colin Farrell as Ray and Brendan Gleeson as Ken playing opposite each other in well judged, believable performances as two hit men waiting in Bruges for their next assignment. Farrell, who is trying to come to terms with a tragic incident, astonishingly, brings much humour to the film with a performance reminiscent of Father Dougal Maguire in Father Ted. Chance encounters, both humorous and violent, with a dwarf, drug dealers and offended American tourists helping the action along to what I found to be a satisfying and not totally predictable ending. Good support from Jordan Prentice as the dwarf (a term his character insists on so don't get all pc) and Ralph Fiennes as Harry, their boss. Not the best tourist ad for Belgium, but the medieval city still looks stunning.

Denial, denial...

One of the things I'm used to doing when I get at work is checking the news on the web. Might set my mood for the day if I find something intersesting, which is, I guess, better than having my mood set on the weather forecast. And this morning, I found this article in Le Monde that made me stop for a moment. More or less, it was about scientists betting that global warming would pause for a few years. Nothing big, just small variations, that have always happened and don't change much, nothing you would notice on a larger period of time. What disturbs me is the way information is molded. What will people remember of the news ? Mostly the title. On the French article, "Des chercheurs parient 5 000 euros sur une pause dans le réchauffement" (Scientists bet € 5,000 on a global warming pause). On another article (in English this time), "Global Warming May Take Ten Year Break".Fine ! Fine ! So we can go on like nothing's happening for another decade !!! How convenient. Let's wait for politicians in all countries getting ready to say : a."See, global warming is not such a threat, average temperatures are colder than last year !". b. "See, the Kyoto protocol was enough, global warming is slowing down!" c. "Global warming ?"Sometimes I get so angry I'd like to say "I don't understand how people can be so [insert swear word of your choice] stupid", but I won't. Because I do.Well, it is sunny today.
