Galaxy Zoo2 has just been launched.Just admit it - you're hanging around in the net all day anyways, so why not something useful for a change and help scientists find and characterize new galaxies. As they advertise, it's like writing 'Hitchhiker's Guide To Galaxy', isn't it. ;)http://www.galaxyzoo.org/Photobucket

Looking for insight

How do we teach manners in a disrespectful and thankless society? We grew up learning "Do unto others...". But that only works well when others comply and compliance has never been society's strong suit. Generally speaking, children are sensitive, more so than adults anyway. So when you explain "Do unto others..." to your ten year old, you have to put in the stipulation that it doesn't matter what anyone else does or says in response to you, that the actions of others do not reflect on you, that you can only do what is right for you. Yet, in doing that, do we lose the ability to teach compassion and empathy for others? Is being polite and having any manners really that overrated? If we are teaching our kids to treat others like they would want to be treated, then when they say "good morning" and are answered with "Fuck You", should our kids then approach them the next morning with a smile and a bigger "Fuck You" since presumably that is how they want to be treated? Then again, FU is not in the good manners handbook, so they should not be saying it anyway (at least not at 10 yrs old). How are we to mend hurt feelings and build thicker skins while rearing our children to be polite and respectful and still encouraging them to do their best in all their endeavors? Sometimes it just feels, in this day and age, that everything good is wrong. So when others teach their children to push yours down and step on them to move ahead, how are we supposed to counteract that. I've changed my philosophy over the years from "there's never a good reason to fight" to "don't start it finish it". It's weird how things change the first time someone else's little brat lays a hand on your child. I now find myself trying to budget for Tae Kwon Do classes so that if anyone thinks they'll lay a hand on my kid, he'll kick their ass sideways and be done with it. I really don't advocate violence, not at all. But I can't have my kids bullied by the strength of the ignorant. They must be able to defend themselves against the violent tendencies of others, at least that's what I keep telling myself. If I keep thinking about this, I think I'll give myself an ulcer, ugh.

Silence Is Never Really

Half an hour in darknessTurns into three in a heartbeatSilent but for the creakingThe wind howls and whispers its secretsNaked eyes of nothing, eternally watchingSounds amplified with closed eyesScreaming sounds of nature barring sleep from taking holdEluding its clutches and being yanked into the presentBy a branch against the window or a soft moan in the wallsShadows of memories of childhood nightmares scuttle across the sleepy mindWorn out nerves lead the way back to irrational dreamsFoggy movements of misshapen nothingGive way to muted colors of warmthThe wind whistles with icy breathThe mind wraps you in a warm blanket and slowly it becomes tomorrow

Ticketmaster sued in Canada

Ticketmaster sued in Canada for scalpingSuit comes as ticket giant nears merger with concert promoter Live NationAPupdated 7:43 p.m. ET, Mon., Feb. 9, 2009LOS ANGELES - Canadian lawyers have launched a 500 million Canadian dollar ($411 million) class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc., saying the company sells tickets above face value in contravention of provincial anti-scalping laws. The lawsuit was filed in Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Monday on behalf of Henryk Krajewski, a Toronto management consultant who bought two tickets to a Smashing Pumpkins concert in November for CA$533.65 including service charges from Ticketmaster subsidiary TicketsNow.The tickets would have cost CA$133 on Ticketmaster's main Web site but despite waiting for the sale time, the man was instantly redirected to the higher-priced tickets on TicketsNow, said Jay Strosberg, a lawyer from one of two firms bringing the case. Ontario law forbids selling tickets above face value, he said."We know what it's like to try to get tickets and then you can't because they're sold out in 10 seconds," he said.Similar complaints were made last week by Bruce Springsteen fans who were redirected to TicketsNow, and two New York-area members of Congress are demanding an investigation. After Springsteen himself complained about the TicketsNow markup, Ticketmaster Chief Executive Irving Azoff apologized and said the company would no longer direct fans to the subsidiary.A Ticketmaster spokesman did not respond immediately to a message seeking comment. The lawsuit, filed by law firms Sutts Strosberg LLP and Branch McMaster, comes as Ticketmaster is about to announce a proposed merger with concert promoter Live Nation Inc., according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the matter publicly.Industry analysts said the proposed merger of the two live entertainment giants raises antitrust concerns for both artists and fans. The lawsuit seeks to include anyone who purchased tickets for an event in Ontario from Ticketmaster or through TicketsNow.com since Feb. 9, 2007, the oldest date for joining the suit within the statutory time limit.

Welcome to W.A.S.T.E.

Hey, it's good to be here. I'll be here all week. Triy the fish (add rim shot)!I don't have much interesting to say and I'm so not technologicially savvy to post anything. I've never seen Radiohead as somebody must have pissed them off the last time they were in Minnesota and they haven't been back since. I was in college when I first heard Radiohead, I was in a music class and this guy brought in 'The Bends' and played "Fake Plastic Trees". I was blown away. I bought that record and played it all the time. When "Ok Computer" came out I had a backlash against them because "Karma Police" was on the fuckin' radio all the time here and you couldn't get away from it. At some point I had bought "Amnesiac" and was unimpressed. Then one day I was doing a cd trade (back when people used to do that sort of thing) and this guy told me he could get me just about any Radiohead show I wanted. I had gotten some shows in a different trade and had really been impressed with the live aspect of the band. He gave me the web page address and I went there. I eventually made my way to the hub and found a screen name and logged in and started chatting and was there for literally five minutes and somebody says "Hey, are you Steve?". It was weird. I'll just come out and say it.... I love the hub! It's a great place to be and after having been away for a couple of years it's good to see that there is a place to go and share music (and get turned on to some new stuff too) and chat with some friends old and new. I could try and tell you my favorite album but it changes all the time. I was listening to "Creep" today from the '96 Hershey Park show and it just reminded me what an awesome song that is.So anyway, that's what I've got. Let me know if you have anything interesting. Please don't be afraid.... he's only Lyle The Crocodile!

Canadia! [sic]

My stay here in Canada is half over. I didn't think the time would go by so quickly, but it really has... of course it helps that I'm working full-time and the weekends go by reeeeallly quickly. There have been a lot of fun things to do here, although I will say that a car is a necessity - if you want to partake in the winter activities so prevalent here (think snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing etc.). Sadly I am not in possession of one while I'm here. Although I could rent one for a weekend and go on an adventure. Personally, I might do that ...As expected... it's flippin' COLD! Thank god for that, though. I was freezing all the time at home so this has given my body a real shock and hey, by the time I get home I'll have a newly adjusted internal temperature. Just watch... I'll be wearing sun dresses in 50/60 degree weather. :) Speaking of which... I cannot wait for spring! I'm super excited and really feel the need to get out and do something fun... what, as if Canada wasn't fun enough? Right... warmth, my friends... I'm thinking the southwest.I came to the conclusion that having a job is so much better than college. This is clearly something that I'm sure many people will disagree with, but for me, personally... it's so much easier. So I'm 100% ready to transition into a job... sad that the economy had to royally freak out and dive into a blackhole right when I graduated and had to start looking for ... umm...an adult-like career. Yay! Sadly, I doubt anyone in Washington will forgive me of my student loans, so hopefully I'll find something.Still to do:- See a Mounty (but would you believe they have Mounty Trading Cards?! Seriously... you guys gotta get some)- See Moose- Eat Elk... don't worry, I won't hunt them down with a helicopter... and random other local dishes- Speak in "Canadian"- Blame Canada

Little Man being Erased

Going down the road I see, in those who pass by me, not the facial expressions that they really have but the kind of expressions that they would have if they knew the kind of life that I’ve led, if my face and my gestures revealed the shy and absurd abnormality of myself. In some eyes that don’t even look at me I suspect there are smirks directed at the awkwardness I embody in a world where people know how to act and enjoy life. I suddenly feel my self suffocating in the heat of the mockery and hostility. Everyone points their finger at me from the depths of their souls. I walk among cruel phantoms that my morbid imagination has created and placed in real people. Everything slaps me in the face and leers.Sometimes I stop where no one even notices me and I look around in search of a new dimension, a door leading into space, to the other side of it, where I could run war from my awareness of other people and my overly objectified perception of a reality that belongs to other people.Paralyzed and paranoid. As soon as I realize how they would feel if they knew me, it’s as if they really did feel that way, as if right at that moment they were feeling exactly that and expressing it. To associate with others is sheer torture for me. I’m forced to associate with them even when they’re nowhere near. All alone I’m surrounded by multitudes. There’s no escape possible, unless I were to escape from myself.(She ended by melting away.)

Man of Aran - British Sea Power

I shall be very interested in this one. Particularly because I must have watched that film at some point during my childhood. I remember images of a storm, heavy rains and fishermen hauling a huge snapping shark into a boat that didn't seem much larger than the animal itself. I was scared shitless.

I'll have to check if those memories are in fact real of if my childhood imagination and the years since then have blown it out of proportion.

Also, British Sea Power. Fantastic band. Their concert on the tent stage at Haldern Festival 2005 was on of the best shows I've ever seen, completely blew me away. Unfortunately their show at Hurricane 2008 wasn't half as good but fortunately I had internalized half a liter of White Russian, so I didn't mind much (^_^) Ended up with the set list at both shows.

In 2008 the centerpiece of the set was 'The Great Skua', a long, beautiful instrumental piece, I expect the Aran sound track to be similar, looking forward to it.

grammy notes... "AT LEAST IT WASN'T FUCKING COLDPLAY"

So, the Grammy thing is over… OVER…. I counted about 17 "At least it wasn't fucking Coldplay" quotes in the first 9 min. But here's some notes on the event which I chose to save… I made particularly nice ones bold and italic ;-) This is just a snippet - which I think accurately reflects the spirit of the moment....[19:28] [pancakebunny] you can't have Radiohead show up to perform at the Grammys and then award the thing to a Radiohead tribute band[19:29] [pancakebunny] it's just wrong[20:49] [rocketman] are they really going to play this shitfest of musicians tonight? they being rh[20:50] [rocketman] i'll take the lack of speedy response as a yes by assuming everyone is glued to their TVs[20:54] [keir] i'm not glued to my tv[20:54] [keir] i didn't answer because i thought it was a rhetorical question[20:55] [keir] if i thought it was a real question i'd have said 'no, they're going to throw kanye out of the building and replace the ceremony with a 3 hour modeselektor set, they really have the power to do that'[20:55] [booboo.laptop] i have to say everything i have seen on here so far is horrible.[20:56] [adamd] i wonder if joe satriani's lawyers chased coldplay downRadiohead: GRAMMYsThom-Jonny-marching band 2009-02-08[22:19] [adamd] yeah![22:19] [inez.laptop] there they go!!!!!!!![22:19] [fixmeup] the utterly brilliant![22:20] [murmurs13] someone cut his hair![22:22] [fixmeup] thats one lucky marching band[22:23] [booboo.laptop] they killed it[22:23] [inez.laptop] holy shit!!!![22:25] [murmurs13] ^what she said[22:25] [fixmeup] my cats looked frightened as they watched me do the Thom dance[22:28] [inez.laptop] ok, NOW it cannot be fucking CP winning it![22:30] [booboo.laptop] no shit if they have it for coldplay they need to change it. HALF of Radiohead made all of Coldplay look like shit[22:54] [inez.laptop] I need a CPR kit handy... this is killing me.[22:55] [adamd] how long left til the end of the show?[22:57] [murmurs13] 1/2 hour?[22:58] [inez.laptop] I think abt 20 min after the commercial break tops...[22:59] [inez.laptop] both Mexico City dates pages on WASTE are going fucking crazy...........ALBUM OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCEMENT[23:23] [adamd] here we go[23:23] [adamd] fingers crossed[23:24] [adamd] wtf[23:24] [inez.laptop] robert plant[23:24] [adamd] why[23:25] [fixmeup] well it wasnt Coldplay[23:27] [adamd] terrible decision[23:29] [radiofran] awful[23:29] [inez.laptop] it's amazing how many ppl say "at least t wasn't fucking cp..."[23:31] [joebreslin] total dogshit[23:31] [joebreslin] but at least it wasn't coldplay[23:32] [rocketman] what a fucking soul suck. time totally slowed down when they announced the RRRRRRasing...[23:32] [rocketman] i got so pumped.[23:33] [inez.laptop] I am really depressed - now I am thinking that I should have spent the time working[23:33] [inez.laptop] except for watching 15 Step - the rest is bullshit[23:42] [inez.laptop] I'm just so sad - heart-broken![23:46] [booboo.laptop] take comfort in their performance Inez.[23:49] [fixmeup] well at least it wasn't Coldplay[23:49] [fixmeup] me + 1 million ppl[23:49] [fixmeup] lol[23:50] [inez.laptop] at least it wasn't fucking coldplay #13.................[23:51] [inez.laptop] mexico-city waste pages scream the same thing[23:53] [inez.laptop] and this one from Mich: in which damn alternative world Coldplay is better than Metallica, The Raconteurs or Kings of Leon? If Coldplay gets Album of The Year, I may shoot myself.[00:04] [joebreslin] ......i half expected gwenyth paltrow to say 'and if thom'd have me, i never would have married chris fucking twatface martin'[00:06] [joebreslin] 'the band my husband's strives to be....RADIOHEAD!'[19:15] [booboo.laptop] his performance sucked. he walked off stage without the band and went directly to his seat after winning his award. then his wife praises RH and looks like she is about to orgasm doing it. so its the least she could do.And because we clearly could not stop for days...[23:31] [lovesickalien] Coldplay on SNL was the final straw for me - as soon as that abortion of a performance finished, i immediately deleted all their songs off my iPod and pitched their CDs[23:36] [lovesickalien] ...may have been the single worst performance I have ever seen by a rock band on that show[23:37] [lovesickalien] Chris Martin is SO full of himself and yet, so entitrely without any redeeming talent at the same time[23:37] [inez.laptop] fuck them really...

Lose Big

I guess I'm far too superstitious not to recognize and thank the universe for not metaphorically zapping me into the ether on the 13th day that is a Friday. Experience tells me it's a good idea to be grateful for a reason to smile on Valentines Day. The nice folks at 429 records liked what I did with the song "Lose Big" so they let me know they aren't threatening to sue or anything because I used their client's song for the personal visual project of the moment. *
Lose Big from Heather Wizell on Vimeo.

A river offers a rafter's test of a boat's endurance, and the site for an unlikely canine love triangle. Photo stills by Heather Wizell. Lose Big is a song by Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide on 429 Records.

But for the record, I always make an effort to let people know and if they don't like what I did, I'm always happy to remove the offended party's music.)I'm still pretty new with this media- so, don't worry, I'm not paying any real bills with this and at the same time preventing you from paying yours. We really are all friends who support creatives here , aren't we?Happy Valentines Day*... so I guess I have THAT going for me...

hey man

hey man -
what are you here for
at my doors
sliding in between?

hey man -
what do you want -
shaking down the walls -
from me

these fragments of the carpet
the kitchen and the pictures
the stovetop burning
all flaming into shreds

this box crumbling
the house burning down
the windows clouding
no sound

to leave me,
in spite of you, man,
as I've always seemed -
alive, so

alive.

stride through the pages,

young once, no more
mine than your own.

shake out your mane
all to trembling,
tear the monsters from the walls.

young once, no more
years eat youth like pages,
beautiful wolf.

pages bearing gifts,
gold and gilded rings
and swords, swords, swords.

kneel humbly,
beowulf.
let the sword cut down

first the monster
then the mother
then the dragon
then the reader
then yourself,
beautiful wolf.
