NOAA Fisheries has just released a report to Congress on improving international fisheries management. The report identifies all nations whose fishing vessels engaged in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, or did not effectively prevent by-catch of protected species in 2011-2012. The report states that Mexican fishing vessels are responsible for nearly 500 loggerhead sea turtle deaths over 2 months in 2012! It also includes shark conservation as a top priority in international agreements, and calls on 10 nations to take action to address IUU fishing in their countries. Let's hope that Congress takes these initiatives seriously, and that conservation-minded decision-makers will be heard when it counts! Nations working together to protect our oceans- what could be better? You can read the report here: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/ia/iuu/msra_page/2013_biennial_report_to_congress__jan_11__2013__final.pdfFacebook: OCEAN DEFENDER - Hawaii
