I was very sad to hear the news that Mark Linkous has died. He and his band toured with us in Europe, at the start of OK
Computer, and they were great every night. His first two records were
very important to me, and I carried his music from the tour into my
life, and my friends’ lives too. He was softly spoken, with an Old
South courtesy I hadn’t heard before: he introduced me to Daniel
Johnston’s music, and the West Virginian writing of Pinckney Benedict.
Mark wrote and played some beautiful music, and we’re lucky to have it.
Rest in Peace.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien has written to the BBC Trust to ask them to save radio station 6 Music.
BBC Director General Mark Thompson announced plans to axe the station – along with various other BBC portals - earlier this week (March 2) in a bid to cut spending within the corporation.
Referring to Thompson as "Herr Director General" on Radioheads blog Dead Air Space, O'Brien then pasted an email he has sent to the BBC Trust, who are engaging in a period of public consultation over the issue before deciding whether 6 Music will actually close or not.
"I wonder if those who made this decision are actually aware of the hugely important role that 6 Music plays in fostering and promoting new bands, as well as still playing the likes of the band that I am in. It literally is the radio lifeblood for music outside of the mainstream," O'Brien wrote.
He added: "Please realise the impact and severity of closing this station down. It will be a huge blow for new bands and their labels. It's not enough to 'refocus' Radio's 1 and 2 as 6 Music does a very specific thing. What you have with 6 Music is a gem of a radio station, it is doing what no other station in the world does or can possibly do.
"Remember it is also still relatively young, give it time. You also finally have a fantastic and seemingly settled line up of DJs. Please get behind it and from what I can gather about its annual budget of £6 million, it surely punches way above it's weight in terms of cultural relevance and importance."
O'Brien joins a growing list of musicians to state their displeasure at the plans to close 6 Music, alongside the likes of David Bowie and Mark Ronson.

on ‘the most gigantic lying mouth of all time’ …. Well, his comrade in
arms and occasional masseuse, Chris Bran (who has also been hugely
involved in our webcasts since we started them back in 2000), has a
pilot out of his new comedy called ‘This is Jinsy’ .. it went out last
Monday night on BBC 3 and you can still watch it on the BBC iplayer, but

Giles was a true mensch of the Oxford scene back in the day .. he directed videos (Colin starred in one he made for the Candyskins, and it's on youtube..),and made a fine documentary on Ride. Well, he’s made his first feature film and it’s the story of an indie band forming and trying to get a deal … Sound familiar?...I love it.. You can see a trailer of it at:

a ludicrous decision for those who actually love hearing great music on
the radio ... so I've written to the BBC Trust, who apparently have the
ability to reverse the decision, and if you feel this way inclined the

Here's what I wrote:

It was recorded last year before my back injury as part of the sessions for my second album but it kind of became its own thing. I enjoyed playing electric for a change - was much fun recording it and the interaction with the other players as opposed to my solo stuff was great.
Kev took the semi improvised tracks and added keyboards and some cut up loops etc.
Lots of fun indeed.

places i was once
a hotel on the highway. outside of denver co. kind of mission-style inside with warm beige stucco walls and some fountains and everything.
i was there with other people and i can't remember who they were.
we didn't stay long and i can't remember why we were there.
it was east of denver on the highway which was kind of a wasteland of storage rentals and shipping container yards and metal shops. big billboards advertising local radio and car dealerships. electrical wires everywhere and the faint outline of the mountains that lay just a few miles away but remained cloaked in the thick haze of denver industry.
we sat in a bar area with little tables reached through labyrinthine halls, past overgrown potted plants. no servers to be found. we just sat there for a while and moved on.
i remember the whole thing being odd. a weird (nice) hotel in a desolate industrial zone. not even near the airport to justify itself.
it was probably that summer of 91. i lived in denver for a time then.
i thought of all the times as i kid i would sit in the back of the family car on a trip to the mountains. we made a game out of when we could first see the mountains. every year we had to be close and closer to denver before we spotted them. the haze and smog got thick and thicker every year.
i would sit in the back, staring out at the vast industrial park that sat east of denver along 76. past barr lake. staring out at it all, thinking of who lived in this mess, who worked here, why stop if not for gas?
why stop indeed.
