Meeting people is NOT that easy...

Don't try to make new friends it only backfires. You know when you were a kid and you could just go up to any kid and say "Hey let's play"? Well that shit don't work anymore. After college it's over if you don't make friends before then your friend window closes and that's that. The weird thing is that is why MYSPACE was invented but if you can't make friends that way then are you totally *ucked? Whatever

THE NOSTALGIA TOUR CONTINUES...

ahoy, w-a-s-t-e-rels!my bloody valentine (thursday) were even louder than in 1993, i didn't think this was possible. for all you indie noise snobs, they were louder than mogwai. seriously. free earplugs were being handed out at the merchandise stall, the health and safety nazis have invaded rock n' roll. the barrowlands, to be exact!if you haven't been, go. the best concert venue on earth. fact.AGENT MCLEAN, the source of my last-minute ticket, was wise enough to make use of his ear plugs. i, being of sterner stuff, felt no need. the cataclysmic white-noise climax to the show put paid to that theory, by which time i had of course lost the fucking ear plugs. bastard.note to kevin shields - twenty-five minutes of feedback is taking the piss. the first five were amazing, the next ten an endurance test. the remainder were, dare i say it, boring?stepping outside into a remarkably quiet gallowgate, i expected some ringing and ear-related breakage. i wasn't ready for the lack of balance. they knocked the utter shite out of me. AGENT MCLEAN was working the next day, i'm pleased to say i wasn't.i got home and discovered the earplugs in my pocket.from the sublime to the ridiculous. THE LEGEND persuaded me to leave the sanctuary of my bed to go camping. i fucking hate camping. his logic?"we're sharing a tent with three nurses!"aha! THE LEGEND, i said, i am used to disappointments and japery on your part. how many of them are men?"none, man, they're all girls."what the hell. against my better judgment (and experience) i decided to go along to... the newcastleton traditional music festival!!! maybe the soothing sounds of the folkies would ease my head, or perhaps a nurse would.those of you sharper w-a-s-t-e-rs will have clicked on the link and noticed the warning at the top of the page. there is no petrol station in newcastleton (thom would be so proud!). check out a map to see how suicidally remote the planned(!) village of newcastleton is from anywhere. it's over twenty miles from hawick (twinned with royston vasey), for god's sake.the police station there is up for sale. true.anyway, the rest of the evening is hazy. i remembering butchering "the northern lights of old aberdeen" with some random member of the public with an accordion. the nurses were, indeed, female. unfortunately, they were all in their fifties and spent the night drinking, farting and trying to touch every man in sight, except for a rather disappointed THE LEGEND.THE LEGEND snores like darth vader with a head cold. needless to say, i forgot to pack the earplugs. drat!all the good work done by my back-rubber has been undone by camping. no coffee, no vegan food anywhere (i found some fig rolls at the convenience store) and loads of bikers from newcastle (not newcastleton). oh, it was hell, dear friends.the only thing that made it worthwhile was the traumatic journey each way. newcastleton is, as i said, only twenty miles beyond hawick (in cultural terms, that's like setting your watch back fifty years), but it takes ninety minutes to drive the twenty miles, such is the hellish (and i hate to call it this) "road".THE LEGEND gets nervous driving, so a few witty quotes about crashing were all i needed to amuse myself. i also found making reference to the boat journey in apocalypse now was both amusing and disturbing.so, dear friends, few laughs this time, but a little insight into my world. i'm off to have a peppermint tea and watch qi reruns on the dave tv channel. i am mellowness personified, except for the painfully unfunny adverts for cobra beer that run on that channel every night. i am never buying cobra beer, they're that bad.i think i may write an email of complaint! haha! does this mean i'm technology-literate, or just a lazy old bastard? probably both.anyway, know that i love you all. each and every one of you.your pal, steve x.

THANK YOU

Thank you Radiohead for an amazing gig last night at Arras. You made something brilliant. I wasn't expecting that much. You and Sigur Ros really know how to rock. Yesterday the mood at Arras was magical. You played my favourite songs (well, not all of them but that's okay because it's a reason to see you again). The lights were extraordinary. You are all rock gods. Thank you again. See you later!

Simon Armitage, Kafka and Derek Walcott

Three literary legends whom I have been and shall be reading at the moment. I read Simon Armitage's book 'Gig'. Which is sort of his autobiography, though it focuses mainly on his music tastes. Very funny and interesting, rare to find in a modern autobiogrphy. If you don't know who he is then buy 'Gig' and 'Selected Poems' and you'll catch up.I've also decided to re-read Kafka's 'The Trial' even though I should be reading 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Alias Grace' for next year of A level but oh well, i've got lots of time.As well as all of this I'm reading Derek Walcott's Collected Poems as well. He was born In St Lucia in 1930 and went to the University Of the West Indies, which I am tempted to go to instead of somewhere in England like Exeter or Sussex. I have family who live in Barbados and so the thought of sitting on a beach in Barbados studying rather than Brighton Pier is a hard one to ignore.

Cooking !

As I am a girl, I am supposed to cook. And as an Australian said once on the phone, I am French, so I am supposed to cook. The thing is, cooking is useless when it is only for yourself. However, you can go into your own little world and not have to explain why you chose that particular recipe, and why you find it worth of interest.Well, of course, when you're choosing this, it is to be expected that people might not understand. Pfff. However, I'm sure the result will be disgusting, but hey, I never said I was a good cook - I just like video games. Should I be playing Cooking Mama, doc ? Anyone interested ? Recipe here ! Dunno if it's good, but it's funny ^^Oh, and by the way, great gig last night in Arras. For once, the Grand Place didn't look depressing (try it on a winter rainy day, it's lovely. Or not). Met a lot of great people. I'm terrible with names, but it' not that important, is it ? I remember sharing a nice "pain et saucisson à l'ail" and sudoku games, lengthy conversations, and got another sunburn - Just like in Paris. I think I can claim the title of "reddest calf of all Arras". Ouch. Should have seen it coming, I mean, when you enjoy baking 1-UP Mario mushrooms, you can't have a social life, get out of your room and prepare your skin for the sun, can you ? But this slight 'war injury' was worth it...I guess.

40/ Jigsaw Falling Into Place - In Rainbows - 2007When this song debuted, I thought it was average. It sounded like a Billy Idol tune with Radiohead guitars. It grew on me a little but I wasn't particularly fond of it. Then it was properly released and I love it. I love the chord changes in this song. The song's lyrics paint a picture of a fast-paced club scene and at the climax of this song the song just bursts with energy. From the furiously picked guitar arpeggios to the (what sounds like) harpsichord to the raised pitch in Thom's singing, this song just screams amazing.39/ 4 Minute Warning - In Rainbows (Disc 2) - 2007I was one of the few people who really liked the live version of this song back in '06. Jonny and Ed surrounded Thom (who was on piano) and they had a little campfire sing-a-long of sorts right there on stage. It was very lovely. It wasn't the best of the new material but it certainly had potential. And BOY did they milk it. The studio version of this song starts with what I can only describe as the sound of heat (it's obviously some sort of synth sound that they came up with... but it works well in the opening). But it's not a campfire sort of heat. More like the smoldering remains of a bombed out building. The lyrics are about the panic and chaos surrounding a 4 minute warning prior to a bombing. And the song sounds like what the scared people in the bomb shelter would sing while waiting.38/ Down Is The New Up - In Rainbows (Disc 2) - 2007Another of the 2006 new material songs. They still haven't played it on their current 2008 world tour... and I really want them to. I love the energy of this song. The lyrics are... alright. There are a couple funky lines in there but they fit the overall theme of the song. So not the best songwriting but the music more than makes up for it. It starts out with piano, drums, vocals, and then segways into the second part, adding guitars. But when the song crashes back into the verse, they introduce orchestra-size strings and give the song an eery, dark, and foreboding sound. Just before the verse ends, the strings build and build and build and then everything just releases into the short "jam" at the end. Thom described the recording and finished sound of this song as a headtrip. Spot on description, Thom.37/ Go To Sleep (Little Man Being Erased.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003There were a couple times when I considered leaving this song off the list. Then I listened to the song and there's just absolutely nothing wrong with this song. It is a classic rock tune. Radiohead showing us that they aren't all glitchy beats and ambient synth. Ed O'Brien, the rhythm guitarrist, is sort of the guy who brings everyone back to reality at times. He loves just rocking out and it was, in fact, he who came up with the opening guitar riff. But it's funny because you can almost feel the tug between bandmates' interests here. The rocking out is very nicely done. But it sounds like the song is almost sung by a robot in human form. There are little computer-induced freakouts here and there in the vocals and guitars that really sort of define what Radiohead are all about. Top-notch song.36/ House of Cards - In Rainbows - 2007Radiohead's "make-out song." Their sexiest song to date. I know for a fact that making love to this song has been done many, many, many times by many, many, many different people. There's just no doubt in my mind. "I don't want to be your friend. I just want to be your lover" is the opening line of the song. Judge for yourself.35/ Worrywort - Knives Out (Pt. 2) - 2001I think that this has quickly become one of my favorite Radiohead b-sides. If I had a properly tuned piano, I would immediately begin to work out the chord structure and little synth riff in the beginning. This is the computer-equivalent of a beautiful, beautiful piano song. I would give anything to see them play this live. And it has such a great message. Definitely proof that Radiohead aren't the gloom and doom band that everyone pretends them to be. "Think of all the fun you could be having." "Such a beautiful day. Find yourself a moment and go and get some wings." About a worrywort / hermit and how they need to live life free of their closed space.34/ Morning Bell - Kid A - 2001I love the drums and guitar in this song. Absolutely love it. I also love how it starts right in the middle of the noise left over from the song before it, "Idioteque." The song is about a marriage breaking up. Sad topic, lovely song.33/ Nude - In Rainbows - 2007Most Radiohead fans know that this song has been kicking around for at least 10 years. But the band could never figure out a proper way to record it. Apparently it has been attempted on every record from OK Computer and on. And now it's here. In its final form. And I love what they did with it. You can make the "old Nude is better than new Nude" argument all you want to but I still enjoy this song too much to hate on it. When I first listened to the In Rainbows version of this song I nearly cried because of the beauty of the beginning. I do wish that they had kept the strings from the beginning going. My only big gripe. But I don't think the song could be successfully pulled off any other way.32/ The Tourist - OK Computer - 1997Some of my favorite lyrics of all time. A rekindled love for this song was sparked from hearing an amazing live version earlier this year. Absolutely brilliant. "Hey man. Slow down."31/ Knives Out - Amnesiac - 2001Some of the creepiest lyrics ever written. And I love it! One of my favorites to play on guitar. The way Thom sings in this one also fits the feel of the songPart 3 later...

Kid A and Low and a little bit more

Kid A: Today I found out heard that Kid A was Radiohead's attempt to recreate David Bowie's transition from Station to Staion to Low. I now have to buy Station to Station. Have to find a good music store. I don't want another of his greatest hits. But they have a great collection of Coldplay, which I will not buy.Cd's and stuff: I like buying cd's. It's like an accomplishment walking home with the cd in the paperbag, not being able to wait to lie down and listen to it while reading the booklet. I havn't bought a cd in a while.Foot Locker: I want some nice sneakers but my local footlocker refuses to offer any.My Teeth: I haven't brushed my teeth in two days now. I think my breath smells. In fact I'm sure of it. I can taste it. And that lady collapsed a while ago. But it's okay because I'm not socialising too much now. I also haven't showered. But other than that I'm doin fine.Bread: My local supplier of bread has problems. His marriage is kinda in trouble. His premises caught fire and he can't deliver bread anymore. It's a bit selfish of him really. He decided to take the insurance money and do something else. And I now have to bear the cost of finding different ways to get bread.Privacy: People should really leave animals alone. But other than that I have two dogs and a cat. And maybe something else.

What really inspires me about this song is it just completely defies category. It rocks, it has rhythm, it's instrumental, it's not too wild (in that furious Battles way that rubs me wrongly for some reason), its like a hammer wailing away at your temples in just the right frequency and tempo to be OK, its OK that you're going to die from the hammer bashing your brains in because it feels good. EXPLAIN THAT!

Top 50ish Favorite Radiohead Songs
52/ Palo Alto - Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP - 1998It was only last week that I finally got my hands on a special edition of the Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP. I've always had the EP digitally but I never bought a physical copy. So as I was driving home from the record store with the songs blaring in my car, the CD player came to "Palo Alto" and I remembered just how much I love this song. I still think that this is the only b-side from the OK Computer era that could have had a place on the album without the album being made worse. I just love the explosions of guitar on "But I'm OK (BADADADA) How are you? (BADADADA)"51/ Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003How could you not like this song? I absolutely love it. Album version and live version. I love the way this song starts and when the beat comes in with Thom's vocals. The song does suffer from an ending that's slightly too long but I love it regardless. I really, really want an instrumental version!50/ Go Slowly - In Rainbows (Disc 2) - 2007When this song first appeared in a set at a gig in England back in 2006, it was ok. Nothing to go on about. It was neat to hear a brand new song but the song itself wasn't very comparable with the rest of material that was debuted in both the same gig and later gigs. Then they released In Rainbows and I got my discbox in the mail and listened to the studio version. WOW. The song has such a cold and dark and pretty feel to it. Like a mysterious dark-haired girl. The song never really builds into a proper climax but the acoustic guitar at the end is more than enough. Not to mention the beautiful glockenspiel and electric guitar riffs. And that guitar "solo!" One detail I really miss from the live version is a riff that Jonny played during the verses that gave the song a slight "desolate desert" sound to the song. Oh well.49/ (Nice Dream) - The Bends - 1995One of my favorites off of The Bends. I absolutely love the chord changes in this song. I would be close to tears if I heard this played live at a future concert. Good tears, of course.48/ Scatterbrain (As Dead As Leaves.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003I've never fully understood why I love this song so much but it's such a perfectly formulated song. The sound, guitars, drums, singing, chord changes all fit the constant mood of the song: looking out a large window at a rainy, windy, messy-weather day. The trees blowing back and forth and the rain causing the whole image to distort.47/ Videotape - In Rainbows - 2007I would feel confident in saying this is one of the more "controversial" songs of Radiohead's repertoire. Not for the lyrics or singing. But for what they did to the studio version. Essentially, they took everything that made the song a fan favorite during its trial runs at live venues and got rid of it. The best live version of this song is definitely the Hammersmith Apollo debut of the song. It was the first time it was ever played publicly and it EXPLODED with energy. But when they got into the studio, they took away the proper drums and guitar and replaced them with a quiet electronic beat and... no guitar. But the twist? The studio version is actually a lot better and more fitting for the song. The lyrics go with the new version so much better than the 2006 live version. It took a couple of months before it clicked. But when it did, it became a personal favorite.46/ Where I End and You Begin (The Sky Is Falling In.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003This song features some of my favorite drumming and one of my favorite themes (musically) of all time (the opening notes). Also some fantastic lyrics. My favorite live performance of the song definitely has to be the performance I experienced firsthand in Atlanta this year.45/ Optimistic - Kid A - 2000I fell in love with this song when I picked up Kid A so long ago... and then I stopped listening to it. It became boring to me. And then Radiohead performed it in Atlanta this year. And I fell back in love with it. The studio version is so rich with "bony-sounding" guitars and a tribal sound unlike any other song they've done before. The lyrics follow the same theme with the opening line: "Flies are buzzing round my head. Vultures circling the dead. Picking up every last crumb." This song just ties together the overall sound of Kid A so perfectly. "Dinosaurs roaming the earth."44/ You and Whose Army? - Amnesiac - 2001I was stuck on this song for a good two weeks when I first got Amnesiac about 4 years ago. It starts so muddled... it reminds me of a man tired and weak from battle, the obvious loser of the fight, continuing to egg on the oversized army ahead of him. He then leads his small force against the larger in their last battle. This is also a live favorite of mine.43/ Fog (Again) - Com Lag 2plus2is5 - 2004"Fog (Again)" is just that song that is irresistable to sing along to. I love every inch of it. It makes me want to cry when I hear it just because it's such an emotion-riddled song. I'm not a huge fan of the electronic (or, original) version of the song though.42/ A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003As I was listening to Scatterbrain while writing this, the song ended and skipped to the next song, "A Wolf At The Door." And I completely forgot how incredibly badass this song really is. Apologies for not originally considering it but when you have a few hundred songs to pick from the task gets a little daunting. Please find and listen to the Atlanta 2003 performance of this song. Amazing.41/ Lift - Live in Salamanca - 2002I don't think I need to describe why I like this song. Or why it needs to be on LP8. Or why I want them to play it live soon. Or why I love Thom's voice in it.More to come!

Radiohead tour

I finally have most of my travel plans figured out. I found a hostel in Hollywood that looks quite nice, and it's less expensive than the sleazy motels I couldn't bear to stay in. I'll be arriving on the 24th, even though I'm not sure if I want to go to the concert that night. I only have one ticket, and I don't really feel like going alone. Plus it's up in the Q area, so it might not even be worthwhile.Phil & I will probably go to a museum or two since we don't have to stand in line for the concert. And I have most of the trip to Santa Barbara figured out. We're arriving on the 27th, giving us some time to walk around before we line up (hopefully not that same night) for the concert. I'm not even sure I'm willing to stand in line all day to get to the barrier this time. But we do have pit tickets so maybe we'll just stand at the back and just listen rather than watch the concert... my only option since I'm short.

2+2=5 and 'dumb motherfuckers'

Hi all!So, a couple of days ago I posted a recording of 2+2=5 from Manchester (June 29, 2008) which captures thom screaming "Dumb motherfuckers" - the video provoked a rapidly growing 3-page discussion touching upon society, censorship, authority, cursing and several other issues that could (+ SHOULD) be of interest to a lot of people. So if you are curious, you can view the video and discussion here (or just click on 2+2=5 on my videos)THX, THOM!and thx to Acid Reign for taping
