It’s funny how certain music scenes have become legendary – Merseybeat in the 60′s, London’s summer of punk in the 70′s, Sheffield’s Electro 80′s and Manchester’s ‘Baggy’ 90′s. When you break them down, they’re just a small handful of bands making very similar music during a very short but high-profile period.

When people talk about regional music scenes, they never talk about Oxford. Yet Oxford’s tight music community has been steadily producing genre-defining bands of the highest quality and integrity for pushing 30 years.

RIDE – who created (and indirectly named) the Shoegaze genre, TALULAH GOSH – the enfant terribles of Riot Girl, Britpop legends SUPERGRASS, Creation’s Alt-Rock heroes SWERVEDRIVER, current Post-Punk/Math-Rock phenomenon FOALS and – oh yeah – RADIOHEAD all came directly from this one scene. They built and took inspiration from it, they got support and encouragement from it, they cut their teeth in its venues and ultimately were launched into worldwide success from it.

But nobody’s ever heard of it.

So now, all of those bands, along with their less-succesful friends and contemporaries and the promoters, managers, journalists, record label owners and gig-goers who built the scene tell their story.

Anyone Can Play Guitar is not like most music docs. Using the unheard stories of some of the greatest bands and the greatest stories of some of the unheard bands as the backdrop to a truly unique and epic saga of success, failure, good intentions and bad outcomes. It refuses to mythologise and explores what can be achieved with community and the harsh realities of the music industry.

From the DIY spirit of the early 80′s right through to  the  controversial corporatisation of Oxford’s best-loved venue, ACPG tracks three decades of highs and lows in a punchy, really engaging style.

The film is narrated by cult comedian Stewart Lee

ACPG was made completely independently by film-maker and music video director Jon Spira over the course of three years.

Klootme has added a demo  (1986) with On Friday's songs !!!!

The songs are: Girl (in the purple dress) and Everybody Knows

Thank you so much Klootme for your demo and story !! absolutely amazing !!!!!!

About this demo Klootme told me:

"History behind the tape is that my husband was at school with the band and partied with them (before Jonny joined them!). Phil was at Uni with us both in Liverpool. The demo was given to my husband at 17 in school. We used to go and see them play in Oxford and was friends with them. They were fairly inactive from 1987 -1990 as a band. But when everyone had finished Uni they got back together and tried to make a go of it. They went to the States...we went backpacking to India for 6 months.

Six months later we retured from India...saw Colin with a binbag full of laundry at the lauderette....."so much for the States" we laughed......."

I remember seeing them in in Oxford where me and my husband made up an audience of 6!

They weren't COOL.

The rest is history..... "

Nosotros éramos amigos y solíamos ir a verlos tocar a Oxford.

No eran nada cool ¡!

El resto ya es historia conocida   … "

Here's a third song from the 1986 demo tape. Recorded at Abingdon School. Baby Radiohead minus Jonny. Hear the '80's......Psychedelic Furs, The Waterboys, U2 and The Smiths influence but take note of the very Radiohead ending! Thom's voice as a 17 year old....And Phil's drumming!

Foster The People Stump Braniacs [NEWS/MUSIC]

11010909698?profile=original

Foster The People are clearly one of the top break-out Indie bands this of this year. Having bypassed the usual gambit of non-stop touring, guerilla marketing and street team assemblage, and ending up at Saturday Night Live and a slew of festivals, it would be unusual for anyone to not know who they are...right?

Wrong.

Turns out even the brainiest of citizens have problems when it comes to knowing what's important to the kids these days. Appearing in a $2000 question [or answer form rather..] was the following:

'Got that song "Pumped Up Kicks" stuck in your head? Blame this trio led by Mark Foster.'

Omg! Are you serious Alec?? You just gave them the answer! But alas, not one of the contestants could even venture a guess that was even close. Guess you can only be smart OR cool...

Watch the people who no doubt went home later and googled them HERE.

A Very She & Him Christmas [MUSIC]

11010910059?profile=original

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, collectively known as She & Him [makes sense] just released a special Christmas album, done in that simple yet classic 50's era style that Zooey is so very good at channeling.

And even though most people dont like to think about the stress and family drama that the Holiday season promises until after chowing down on turkey later this month, how could you not want to hear some carols when they're sung so beautifully by Zooey [who is quite a looker herself!].

So here are some of my favorites from the album, which feature classics from Frank Sinatra and The Carpenters.

Enjoy!

Atlanta Tickets

Was anyone on here able to get Atlanta tickets through WASTE?  Its my understanding that Philips is doing paperless ticketing by scanning the credit card used  for the ones purchased through Ticketmaster.  Does anyone know if this applies to the  WASTE tickets as well or do we need to go through Will Call  and present the confirmation email and ID to get our tickets?

Anchor of Love

No bird flies forever, somewhere/day, must land

No boat sails forever, somewhere/day, must anchor

My memories of your original image of body, mind and soul

is the anchor of my love for you

If that original image of all is not the same entity as I have known, this,

would cause a series of earthquakes, tsunamis, that,

I know not where to land, where to anchor, that,

the compass of my love for you will be confused and lost.....

I truly hope the soundtrack of our motion picture is

a solo composition of one genius, Beethoven,

not a symphony piece of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart...,

sorry Mozart, nothing personal....  :P

Battles, Caribou & Les Savy Fav are individually three amazing groups. Collectively, they are the curators of this years ATP Festival taking place in Minehead, England.

This gathering of the bands is going down 12/9 - 12/11 and looks to be one of the premiere indie/electro/dance/chillwave mash-ups this year [despite the fact it's right before it ends]. Some of the big names to be seen and heard include:

11010907453?profile=original

Wow...I am officially jealous of the Brits.

But you dont need to be! I've included Caribou's custom ATP Festival Mix, 'Nightmare Before Christmas' for y'alls enjoyment. Its won't necessarily give you the same feeling you'd get seeing Washed Out, Four Tet or Surfer Blood perform live per say, but the hour-long track might drown out the sorrow a little bit..

Daft Punk Classic Gets Cherokee Reboot [MUSIC]

11010907501?profile=original

Daft Punk is getting new life breathed into one of their golden oldies' 'Something About Us.' French duo Cherokee has given it a chill new lounge vibe with teasing vocals, soothing synths, and what sound like waves crashing in the background. Ideally, the perfect track to take with you on your next trip to Miami.

The original track was nestled right in the middle of their 2001 release 'Discovery', along with fan favorites ' 'Digital Love' and 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' [which was of course sampled by Kanye, and then oddly covered by 30 Seconds To Mars...wow].

Thom Yorke Sings About Zombies [MUSIC]

11010909088?profile=original

Thom Yorke has been a very busy lad lately--teaming up with Berlin-based production duo Modeselektor for the vocals on their atmosperic new single 'Shipwreck.' French director Tony T. Datis [i.e. Skrillex] has directed an entertainingly eerie visual which centers around a little boy and blood-lusting zombies. The plot deals about one of the oldest fears of mankind. While facing a serious threat by the zombies, the kid seems to be frightened by something else.

Watch it below to find out what.. The song is taken from Modeselektor's current album, Monkeytown, which is out now on their own Monkeytown Records.

The Black Keys are apparently the very thing Ellen Dengenres has been waiting for..Well, not exactly.

If you recall, the video for their new track 'Lonely Boy' is something of a viral sensation. Featuring [only] an odd, round man dancing to the song and nothing else--the video was just delightful enough for Dengenres to invite the man [Derrick Tuggle] to her show for an impromptu boogey session.

I mean, we all know that Ellen loves to get down, but the fact she [at least] knows who The Black Keys are is enough for me to call it newsworthy.

In the video below you can catch the now-even-weirder dance performed live on tv.

Just to make it worth your while, I've included a stellar remix of The Keys' 'Everlasting Light' by London group, The Mummers :

The Antlers: '(Together)' [UPDATE/MUSIC]

11010906085?profile=original

Brooklyn crew The Antlers is releasing their mixed up odds-and-ends EP in a weeks time. In the interim, I thought I'd share one of my favorite songs of the album, 'Parantheses' [as remixed by PVT].

Its a dark, falsetto-laden jam that sounds a lot like a Depeche Mode/NIN hybrid. A hauntingly perfect edition to this dreary, overcast day in NYC.

The rest of the album (togehter) drops 11/22 on Frenchkiss records. Get it.

RADIOHEAD! As Only Deadmau5 Can Do [MUSIC]

11010910098?profile=original

Legendary mouse-headed musical genius Deadmau5 has been so kind as to bless us with his own remix of Radiohead's track 'Codex'. Although surprisingly tame [almost sleepy], its nonetheless a great moment in time--as I have often wondered [nay..fantasized] about what a remix would sound like at the paws of Deadmau5.

Well, wonder no more. Here it is:

Dillon Francis Reconstructs Death Cab [MUSIC]

11010905462?profile=original

L.A. dubstep DJ Dillon Francis is all for a good challenge. Which is why I'm not surprised he decided to take a stab at pimpin' out a track off of Death Cab For Cutie's new release 'Codes & Keys'. Choosing 'Under The Sycamore' [which is already one of the more danceable tracks] Francis removed virtually all traces of the indie-emo-esque dance party it originated from, and stripped it down only to reinvent the sound as suitable for a much more LA style scene.

No complaints here.

What we're left with is a song that could have easily found its way into the Tron soundtrack. Complete with break-beats, synths and electonic elements that might startle even the most poised Brooklyn hipster, this remix is sure to get you moving.

Dillon's mix will be featured on Death Cab's upcoming 'Keys & Codes' remix album [out 11/21].

I don't know about everyone else but I feel like this Atoms For Peace album is going to be great and I CANNOT wait for a release date. Thom promised it out this year, but I feel like if it were to come out this year, we already would have a release date... Does anybody know anything or any ideas about when it could come out?

Thanks,

NEWNESS. Get Your Damn Hands Up [MUSIC]

monday.jpg?width=500

Being Monday n' all, its hard to look towards the future when the week just started. I get that. But if anything has been proven to help transition from an all-too-short weekend back to the daily grind, its new music.

With some new remixes of Lady Gaga by Foster The People, some new indie tracks from lil' cutie Little Boots, The Drums,  mixes from Death Cab For Cutie and live performances from Lana Del Rey, it just might not be the worst day of 'tweek' anymore.

Enjoy!

Did you know the duo known as Massive Attack put out a new track this weekend?? ...No? Me either! They may be one of your likes on Facebook, but unless you moused your way over to their fan page you would've missed it too.

No worries, the label for the song which read: '11/11/11 demo'  on Friday, was anything but obvious. I figured they were merely pointing out the date but following the link brings you to a track entitled, '3D & Vermona Demo' [so it was only somewhat relevant].

The only thing that can be said definitively is that this song IS a demo. Insightful, we know. But even in its demo stage, it's a strong showing for Massive Attack, replete with those lush synth sounds that define the trip-hop sound they're known for.

Last month, M.A. & fellow English artist Burial got together for a twin-track session and came out the other end [multipled] with this delicious number titled 'Four Walls':

Massive Attack  & Burial - Four Walls

...and here is the most recent effort '3D & Vermona':

 Massive Attack - 3D & Vermona Demo

...if you're not into streaming, DOWNLOAD the tracks below:
