Minus The Bear's Top 10 Songs [MUSIC]

11010910272?profile=original

Just because they enjoy writing 'thoughtful songs about girls, drinking and life' [according to their wikipedia profile] that doesn't mean that they remain one-dimensional. In fact, for the past 10 years they've been playing and touring--they have taken on a much larger scale of responsibility.

Minus The Bear is just wrapping up their 2011 tour and plan on returning home to Seattle where big stuff is happening.  "Well, we get home in November, our drummer Erin [Tate] gets married right away, Dave [Knudson] has his first child in December, and then in January we'll begin recording again," says singer/guitarist Jake Snider [no relation to Dee Snider...].

We all have to grow up sometime I suppose. But if that entails massive album sales on their latest 'OMNI', I'm sure they're not complaining. For even more evidence of maturation, Jake's was kind enough to share his band's top 10 favorite songs of moment. Certainly an eclectic list for the adult in all of sus:

  1. Charles Bradley - No Time for Dreamin'
  2. A Tribe Called Quest - Show Business
  3. Dead Can Dance - Bird
  4. The Dream - Mr. Yeah
  5. Nine Inch Nails - Ruiner
  6. Elton John - Passengers
  7. Russian Circles - Mladek
  8. Nomo - My Dear
  9. Adele - He Won't Go
  10. Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne

This past year, the world said goodbye to one of its more troubled yet exceptionally talented singer/songwriters. It was not an easy thing for fans like myself to come to terms with, especially considering she had been making serious strides on her recovery as of late and even began touring again after a long hiatus. But Amy Winehouse will not be forgotten. And to prove it, her latest album-to-be, 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' just got some visual help for those looking to remembe the R&B soul-singer.

The new single, 'Our Day Will Come' was originally a doo-wop song Winehouse covered in 2002, but it was buried and never saw the light of day until just recently. Its been given a video montage of pictures and clips from her better moments.

Truly a sweet gesture.

Check out the video HERE or HERE and below hear two tracks off the album which is out 12/6:

The Roots are about to release their [lucky] 13th studio album, but their 1st concept album titled 'undun.'

undun [out 12/6] is an existential re-telling of the short life of a protagonist and semi-fictional character Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford's internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out `on the corner'. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented--postmortem--and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun..

So who is Reford? And why title the album undun?  Well turns out Redford is the creation of Michigan-based folk musician Sufjan Stevens. And the album name is derived from a classic Guess Who song

Drummer ?uestlove explains:

"Well, the album's name is inspired by the Guess Who song 'undun.' But we named the character after the Sufjan Stevens song 'Redford' from his Michigan record. We imagined Redford as being like Avon Barksdale from The Wire. He's a good guy who could have just gone to college and been a great engineer or something. But he makes a bad decision and pays for it. We tell that story in 10 songs, under 44 minutes. Actually, Sufjan makes an appearance on the album, too."

Nice! Please go on...

"We've always loved the song "Redford" from Michigan. So we close the new album with a cover of "Redford." We stretched it out into this four-part movement. Part 1 is Sufjan at the piano performing it. And then Part 2 is a string quartet that we had interpret it. Part 3 is myself and D.D. Jackson, who is an avant-garde piano player. He's probably one of the most dangerous pianists — I don't know how he doesn't have carpal tunnel now. But he just destroys, literally, destroys the piano. The final movement, which ends the record, is essentially the beginning of the story."

The album is certainly a whole new direction for the band, who--if youre a fan of late-night tv--you have no doubt seen backing up Jimmy Fallon nightly on his show. And while many are quick to judge and claim The Roots have sold-out their audience to play on cable television as a backing group, ?uestlove explains its now afforded them the ability to be passionate about their music careers outside the program and create the music they've always wanted.

"I saw the Stereogum story, like, "Seeing the Roots play on Fallon is like seeing Miles Davis play in the subway for change." There's always two ways to see the situation. I knew people were going to underestimate us. I knew they'd instantly say it was uncool for incredible musicians to play on a late night comedy show. But I looked at the benefits...Our Def Jam life is now an evening job. We now have the comfort and confidence to start making the albums we want to make. That's why undun feels like our second album. There's no pressure. It's like, "What if we get dropped?" Well, money's not a problem anymore. We make way more money now than before. We can treat music as a passion as opposed to a survival thing. You'll really hear the difference on undun."

Personally, I cannot wait for the album to drop. Having heard several tracks off it, I can say without a doubt that you can literally hear the heart and soul of the band in this one. New, different and full of emotion.

Bon Iver [aka Justin Vernon] has a critically acclaimed self-titled album right now that the world is in the process of adoring [and for years to come I imagine]. But what could make such a successful release even better? I'm not sure...perhaps an accompanying nature-themed visual  masterpiece for EACH track?? Absolutely..

Although the album is going to be re-released as a deluxe edition which includes the visual tracks, you can also purchase the trippy scenery HERE separately for a fraction of the price [only $3.99]. And considering the deluxe edition does NOT include any new material, it makes total sense. FYI, the image above is from the visuals for Beth/Rest.

Here are some melt-in-your-brain songs off the album:

Neon Indian Plays For No One [VIDEO/MUSIC]

11010907083?profile=original

A new live video for chillwave band Neon Indian's song 'Hex Girlfriend' just surfaced today, and demonstrates that even without an audience they can still rock the {insert expletive here} out! NPR's 'All Songs Considered' program first debuted the video featuring the Texans in an empty, dimly lit venue sans a crowd.

The final product is a beautifully filmed live performance, shot from almost microscopic close range. Rather than wide shots of the sweaty people and ambient noise, we get twirling knobs, tangled cords, stomping feet and smoking equipment. The finished product is a highly intimate look at what a concert might look like from a band's perspective. Allowing you to study their style without getting shoved in the aisle..

Very cool.

Pop over to Stereogum to check out the VIDEO.

Here's a few new tracks off their album Era Extrana [out now] for your listening pleasure:

Les Claypool, of Primus fame, is back with a brand new video. Well, it only look him a good 11 years but I think it was worth the wait. "I spent so many years dodging goofball bullets from doing the 'Wynona's Got A Big Brown Beaver'  that I don't resist it anymore," Claypool said. "I got to put on a giant lobster suit, and that doesn't happen every day."

Lobster suit, you say?? Interesting..Please go on.

"Musically, it's upbeat," Claypool  says. "But lyrically, the song is all about impending doom. This last year has been a trying time in my world, with my mother fading away, my brother's baby boy getting diagnosed with leukaemia, and other people having various ailments. So the song is about a storm coming, the rain must fall. But to depict that would have been the cliché thing to do, so we've got lobsters."

Also not intended is any sort of animal cruelty statement. Claypool--who is an avid fisherman -- has conjured some new songs for his seventh and latest album Green Naugahyde [already out] with titles like, 'Last Salmon Man' and 'Salmon Men.'

And as for the plight of the crustaceans?

"PETA would probably hate me for this," Claypool said, "...but I think it's kind of like going to sleep in a hot tub. Or like having too much wine and going to sleep."

Speaking of wine, the restaurant scenes feature vintages from the musician's own winery, Claypool Cellars. "You couldn't put any real alcohol in videos before, because MTV wouldn't play them," he said. "We thought, 'What the hell? MTV's not going to play this anyway!"

Very true sir...MTV is not the shining beacon of rebllious self-expression it use to be. Nevertheless, enjoy the video in all its glorious weirdness below:

Sean Penn: Nazi Hunting Rockstar [MOVIE]

11010905293?profile=original

...Yikes! Sean Penn is looking really down these days!

Fear not, his humanitarian efforts will not be thwarted by his angst and eyeshadow. Penn is simply gearing up [and goth-ing out] for his role in the upcoming film 'This Must Be The Place'. And although named for a song of the same title by the Talking Heads [and with music by David Byrne OF the Talking Heads!!], he is certainly looking WAY more like Robert Smith. And if you don't know who THAT is, I feel bad for you.

The film [which opens next month], stars Penn as a bored, retired aging rock star who sets off on an existential journey of sorts to find his father's persecutor--who happens to be a Nazi war-criminal hiding out here in the States..So there's going to be some revenge sprinkled in there for good measure. Maybe..

Also appearing in the film are Frances McDormand [Almost Famous, Burn After Reading], and Judd Hirsch [A Beautiful Mind, Numb3rs].

Check out the beautiful trailer HERE:

MGMT - Late Night Tales [MUSIC]

11010906055?profile=original

If you are a fan of mixtapes--and why the hell wouldn't you be--then you may no doubt be familiar with the music series known as LateNightTales. These studio sessions are albums curated by a host band/artist and features tracks [often B-sides or unreleased demos] by other fellow performers that compliment their own style.

I've been following this series for years now, which stretch back nearly a decade and have been hosted by greats' such as The Flaming Lips, Arctic Monkeys, Trentmøller, Groove Armada, and Turin Brakes. And not to leave anyone out and with hurt feelings, the list goes on to include even the likes of Jamiroquai, Snow Patrol, and Belle & Sebastian.

The most recent compliation was curated by the electic electro-indie pop rockers, MGMT. It features some soothingly nice music by themselves, The Velvet Underground, Disco Inferno, The Chills and Julian Cope.

DOWNLOAD some killer tunes below:

MGMT - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything (Bauhaus Cover)

The Chills - Pink Frost

Disco Inferno - Can't See Through It

Julian Cope - Laughing Boy
