WASHINGTON (AP) -- Conservationists have taken the first detailed look at the world's mammals in more than a decade, and the news isn't good."Our results paint a bleak picture of the global status of mammals worldwide," the team led by Jan Schipper of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in Gland, Switzerland, concluded."We estimate that one in four species is threatened with extinction and that the population of one in two is declining," the researchers said in a report to be published Friday in the journal Science. The findings were being released Monday at the IUCN meeting in Barcelona, Spain."I think the bottom line is, what kind of a world do you want to leave for your children," Andrew Smith, a professor in the Arizona State University School of Life Sciences, said in a telephone interview."How impoverished we would be if we lost 25 percent of the world's mammals," said Smith, one of more than 100 co-authors of the report."Within our lifetime, hundreds of species could be lost as a result of our own actions, a frightening sign of what is happening to the ecosystems where they live," added Julia Marton-Lefevre, IUCN director general. "We must now set clear targets for the future to reverse this trend to ensure that our enduring legacy is not to wipe out many of our closest relatives."The new report updates the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species, which overall includes 44,838 species, of which 16,928 are threatened with extinction. Of these, 3,246 are in the highest-category of threat, critically endangered, 4,770 are endangered and 8,912 are vulnerable to extinction. The IUCN estimated that 76 mammal species have gone extinct since 1500. See which mammals made the list »While the new report estimated that one in four mammals is threatened with extinction, the actual numbers listed were 1,141 out of 5,487 species. That comes out to 20.8 percent, closer to one in five. However, the researchers noted that there were several hundred species about which they don't have enough data to classify. They believe that the lack of information about those animals indicates that they exist in such small numbers that many could be endangered, raising the total to 25 percent or higher, Smith explained.Among the mammals particularly in danger are primates, used for bush meat in parts of Africa and facing major loss of habitat in Southeast Asia, Smith noted. The report also notes unusually high threats to tapirs, hippos, bears, pigs and hogs, while among the less threatened are moles, opossums and free-tailed bats.In general, larger mammals were found to be more threatened than smaller ones. Larger species tend to have lower population densities, grow more slowly and have larger home ranges. For land species, habitat loss is a major threat across the tropics, including deforestation in the Americas, Africa and Asia. Hunting is having devastating effects in Asia, but African and South American species are also affected. For marine mammals, the major threat is accidental death, especially fisheries by-catch and vessel strike.Climate change is also affecting sea ice-dependent species such as polar bears and harp seals.Even though most of the world has been explored, new mammal species continue to be discovered. This year's species total of 5,487 is up 19 percent since 1992.Many newly discovered species are among those that are not well documented, living in regions in need of future research such as tropical forests in West Africa and Borneo. Marine mammals are not as well studied as land mammals and are more difficult to survey. While it raises concerns, the new analysis isn't all bad news. It found about five percent of currently threatened mammals showing signs of recovery. The black-footed ferret moved from extinct in the wild to endangered after a successful reintroduction by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in eight Western states from 1991 to 2008. Also, wild horses moved from extinct in the wild in 1996 to critically endangered this year after successful reintroductions started in Mongolia in the early 1990s.In addition to raising concern about mammals, new additions to the IUCN Red List include:-- Indian tarantulas, sought by collectors and threatened by the international pet trade.-- The Rameshwaram parachute spider has been listed as critically endangered due to habitat loss.-- The squaretail coral grouper from the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific has been listed as vulnerable because it has become a luxury food.-- In Costa Rica, Holdridge's toad moved from critically endangered to extinct, as it has not been seen since 1986, despite intensive surveys.-- La Palma giant lizard, found on the Canary Island of La Palma and thought to have become extinct in the last 500 years, was rediscovered last year and is now listed as critically endangered.IUCN also said it is issuing a Sampled Red List Index, developed in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London. The index takes a random sample of species from a taxonomic group to calculate the trends in extinction risk within that group. It can be used to calculate trends much like an exit poll from a voting station. The IUCN describes itself as the world global environmental network. It is made up of more than 1,000 government and nongovernment organizations and almost 11,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries. The research for the report took five years and involved more than 1,700 scientists around the world.

some people notice lies quicker than others. avoid these people. choose solo over a group. there is less chance of disappointment. avoid women. by yourself, its so much simpler. choose yourself. choose a handshake of carbon monoxide.

With her take on The Doors' song "The End" Nico showed how far the soul may wander.
This Tube is an extract from a Live show recorded 8 Miles from my home & produced by a company from 'Leafy Lytham' in Lancashire, where I lived as a lad. It seems so bizarre to me that she should visit such a backwater, at all. It's not even the Preston GuildHall but some seedy bar stage. In 1983 when this Concert was recorded I had just moved to Europe where I had encountered a very real German 'Femme Fatale' and a totally pointless & fruitless relatationship from which I could not get away for nearly a decade. Wierdo!!!'The End' shocked me as a teenager, into relating to the hidden feelings about life I had following the early death of my Mum from Cancer. Some modernists call Nico a Goth. No such label existed back in 1965 when she came to light. She released her second Solo LP 'The End' in 1974. I was 18 years old and well struggling with the dark side.DeathOn July 18, 1988, while on holiday with her son in Ibiza, Spain, Nico had a minor heart attack while riding a bicycle, and hit her head as she fell. A passing taxi driver found her unconscious, and had difficulty getting her admitted to local hospitals. She was incorrectly diagnosed as suffering from exposure, and she died the next day. X-rays later revealed a severe cerebral hemorrhage as the cause of her death.Nico was buried in her mother's plot in Grunewald Forest Cemetery in Berlin. A few friends played a tape of "Mütterlein", a song from Desertshore, at her funeral.LegacyNico has been an influence on many acts. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Patrick Wolf, Bauhaus, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, Morrissey, Björk, Coil, Jocelyn Pook, Fabienne Shine (who covered "All Tomorrow's Parties"), Dead Can Dance as well as numerous contemporary goth bands have all cited Nico as a major influence.[Source]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico

hmmm

I think.. I don’t have a need anymore to feel like I want to be a boy. For some reasons I wish I was.. or.. could be a pretty young man. But they were just some unstable moments in my life and now they are gone. I’m okay about being a girl. What a surprising thought.

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas

This was a difficult film to watch. The eight year old son of a concentration camp commander, who has no idea of the horrors that his country is inflicting on the Jewish people, befriends a boy in the camp. This friendship proves solid in the end with unexpected results.David Thewlis plays the Commandant as cold and determined. His character tries to justify his job as essential for the Fatherland, but all the Nazi crap is balanced, probably not too realistically, by his wife's horror when she realizes what is going on on her doorstep and by his mother's refusal to visit. This was put down to 'illness', but was because she was opposed to the regime. The film is gripping and at times you feel yourself holding your breath - I think everyone in cinema was; there was complete silence for most of the film and for many minutes afterwards. The focus is on the family and the son, Bruno, who is trying to make sense of what is happening. His innocence is crushed a little at a time, but he fails to grasp the full horror of what is happening on what he thinks is a 'farm' nearby; not many people at the time knew of the real purpose of the 'shower rooms' or what was being burned in the camps.Asa Butterfield as Bruno and Jack Scanlon as Schmuel give good performances as the boys, very natural and if the film wasn't so chilling in subject matter you might say charming.Mark Herman directs the film in an understated way that allows the story to unfold. The characters are not forced into good/bad, pigeonholes but have depth, which doesn't seem forced upon us, but allows for a glimpse into how the tragedy of the Holocaust came about and was sustained. As I said a difficult film to watch, but well worth it.

Found a new Band to listen to!!!

New to me anyway. They're called Home Video. :P I'm excited since I rarely, rarely ever discover a new band that I like. Unfortunately most music nowadays has changed far from my taste. I hear the occasional new song I like, but rarely a band. The only time I usually like something new on the radio is if its from one of my old bands I already know.Anyways, (so far at least) I think I'm really going to like them. A few influences:The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Björk, Massive Attack, Brian Eno, Radiohead, The Cocteau Twins, Boards of Canada, My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, PortisheadAnd by the way - I'm really excited that the Verve is back now. I need to go get that new album...

Another stellar day at the lab

The homeless-santa-claus excuse of a professor was on a role once again today for our micro lab. With characteristic patronizing non-answers, we learned today that all of the processes we have been going through in the last three or four labs - about 9-12 hours of time - we have to all come into the lab sometime this weekend and do all those processes together at once on our individual unknown samples now.Okay, so I don't fancy driving an hour up to the campus on my weekend when I have a ton of other classes to attend to and spending the majority of my day at the lab to get this done (it will probably take about 8 hours), but alright. That I don't like, but can deal with. Here's the problem. He still hasn't really explained to us what exactly we HAVE been doing with the last three or four labs. If he couldn't give us straight answers then - how are we supposed to do this alone with our own samples? And there's the one conversion thing that we've never done before, but somehow or another we're supposed to come up with this after doing all of our dilutions, spread plates, readings, etc. Don't know what it is! But we're supposed to do it. Also there's something else we did today...with these reddish samples. We took readings. Don't ask me why.And had we not mentioned that we needed all the many supplies for the series of tests we'll do over the weekend, he probably would have forgotten to get and leave it all out!Whatever it is we figure out to do this weekend, we're supposed to do a write up on it too for next week. And the exam! It still had some pretty left field questions and things that we never went over - but it was better than the last one! I think....that means, in other words, maybe the class just failed this time instead of really failed.
