Yeah, yesterday was a good day. No beer though.

Well... Yesterday was a good day, so I guess I was right for once.Have had the pleasant news that a local branch of FoE was opening in the city I live in. As usual when I go to this kind of meetings, I feel weird, for a lack of better words. I don't know anybody in these circles, as I am not a member of any association of this current of ideas. Let's say it's because I like my independance, in politics at least. So, people stare at me (look, she's less than 30, how come she's here ? Does anyone know who she is ?) I feel like I'm intruding, even if they are not hostile or anything (of course they aren't.) Today's session of 'who's that girl?' was funny ; one of the organisers, after greeting everyone he knew, came to me, saying 'Hi. you are... ?', probably waiting for me to say 'Oh, hi, I'm from the *** local group' or 'from the *** association, we really like what you do'. Instead, I said 'Just curious.' After sputtering a few words, he left. Is that supposed to make me feel welcome ? I didn't know I was that scary. But, if anything, it's just funny.Anyway, the meeting was nice. Not much I didn't know, but it's always nice to refocus your knowledge. The best point of it all was the attendance of representatives of two city councils. One from the very town of Lille, which is very positive because it's quite a big city and could become an example of how cities could develop sensibly. The other one was from a smaller city, which is fine too because that man told us about the difficulties of raising money for any green city development. In France there has been a huge buzz on ecology last year, during the campaign for the presidential elections, and after the elections during the Grenelle de l'Environnement, which aimed at determining French politics concerning the environment. The discussions were including a financing of city planning partly by the State ; which has miraculously disappeared from what the law has become at the end of the Grenelle. Oh, and, yeah, the law concerning the GMO, which had been censored by the French assembly, has been forced by the government. Will the Légion d'Honneur be given once more to lobbyists ? Doesn't mean anything anymore anyway. So, yeah, nice to hear from local politicians who are interested in environmental matters. And they knew what they were talking about ; let's see if they are given the possibilities to act.I guess just for that, it was a good thing to keep going to this kind of meetings, even if I think I'll probably never completely belong. And the place, even if creepy (huge cold old house with big windows and creaking wooden floor), was nice for once : we were in a room which was used for a Claude Cahun exhibit . I didn't know who the hell was this artist, and I think I like her work. I felt spied on (what eyes she had !) and didn't take enough time to look at the photos at the end of the meeting, but I like it anyway.

Finishing for today with this link to a Le Monde article (I'm too lazy right now to translate it), about how a wedding was cancelled in the very city I live in, the same city that had this nice FoE meeting and Cahun exhibit, because the bride had lied about her virginity. Because obviously, brides' virginity is still considered as something of interest in France.Thinking more and more and more of moving to Bhutan...

Coldplay are idiots

I just heard the new album and surprise surprise its very boring. They are trying to be radiohead but fail miserably. The proof of why they are idiots lies in the fact that at an Arcade Fire gig last year Chris Martin said he had "discovered" a record called Loveless by a group called My Bloody Valentine. Thanks for that Chris, now shut up and make some music thats actually interesting. Rant over.

OM NOM NOM

The middle part of today was consumed by the longest, most rambling memorial service EVER, in honor of my dad's sister's husband's father. Why so long? It started as a Catholic funeral, then came the hordes of veterans telling rambling stories, and THEN they brought in the full honor guard for a 21-gun salute/taps on the bugle/slooooow folding of the flag for the widow. This evening, I consoled myself by making the best salad ever. I needed to record it somewhere, so… here. The best salad everComposed of torn red leaf lettuce, baby spinach, and thinly shaved fennel bulb and radishes. Topped with toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Dressed with thinly sliced shallot mellowed in lime juice, whisked with honey and olive oil.Heaven!

Hey All, Love W.A.S.T.E. it totally rocks as a fansite period let alone being about Radiohead. Can't wait to see these guys again in Chula Vista..saw them there with Supergrass in 2006. Hope all of you are as excited as I am. I'm still a little bit P.O.'ed about buying the tickets through a scalper because TM blows and I didn't know about the presale through WASTE, but LIVE & LEARN. Anyway, I'll have to post my dream setlist and see how close they get to playing it. Bringing my wife & I who have seen RH before and 2 daughters..this will be their first RH show. They are pretty excited to be sure. Hopefully, can see some of you there.

Dead space ventilation

A portion of every breath we take is wasted on what is called dead space, those areas within our lungs that don't participate in gas exchange. Our immune system is designed to both protect us and kill us if the need arises. If you tallied up every cell in and on our bodies, you'd find that we are outnumbered by an order of magnitude by the bacteria, viruses and god knows what else we rescue from evolutionary deletion. Even more startling, 20 percent of the protein you digest is your own -- you literally digest a bit of yourself every day, to make new bits of yourself, every day. Roughly every seven years, every cell that makes you you has been replaced; even your bone. Entirely new; entirely not ourselves but exactly ourselves. One has to wonder how we manage to hold on to our memories. We are cannibals, we carry death and scourge, we change unwittingly, we decide what to eat for breakfast. Yesterday I woke up sucking on lemons. Who cares. As long as everything's working.I'm about to head to England for summer vacation after a grueling year at school, and while I should be excited to be spending my last 3 months of freedom till retirement indulging every hedonistic whim that strikes my fancy, I feel quite numb and listless. Can't say why. The easy answer would be that all the parts of me I had to selectively mute in order to get through the year just haven't come online yet, but I know that's not it. I haven't packed a single thing yet and I start traveling tomorrow.Last night I was saying summer goodbyes to some friends. Regan, who's on hula-hooping scholarship for medical school, said: "The next time we see each other, we're all going to be different people". Is it possible to mourn for that part of yourself you know is passing on even though you know that what's coming is going to be infinitely better? It's like putting a plate of food in front of someone who's been in stage 4 starvation. You realize the magnitude of what you've been going without for so long, and it immobilizes you.I'm now listening to Amnesiac. If I could administer it intravenously I would.

guitar status

I'll resist writing a sensible review of the latest 'Indie' film 'Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull' because it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is; a formulaic comedy action romp fulfilling all the expectations of anyone who has seen the previous 'Indie' films. If you liked them you won't be disappointed.

Life in a Glass House

The unassailable logic of our warped and twisted universe states that it will always piss down on a bank holiday. Fucking rain. The sky I am gazing absent-mindedly out at is indecently miserable. People could be out in the sun, the fresh air, maybe even enjoying themselves, but no... had to rain, didn't it. Instead, the populace will be reduced to traipsing glumly round shopping centres and supermarkets and garden centres, indulging in a spot of rainy-day commercialism, a retailer's wet-dream, while sincerely wishing with all their sweet little hearts that they were somewhere else. Bless 'em.The predictability of this scenario probably says something about the crushing mundanity of 21st century existence but, to be honest, the soul-sappingly depressing weather means I just can't be bothered. Ho hum. Tomorrow is fairly likely to be another day...

I feel better, I feel better now you've gone.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.

I feel better, I feel better now there's nothing wrong.
I got better, I got better, I got strong.

Tell me something, tell me something I don't know.
Tell me one thing, tell me one thing, and let it go.

I got something, I got something, heaven knows.
I got something, I got something, I don't know.

Late review

Despite the way the show worked out, I guess I should make a brief note about what I thought of it, in the blogging spirit. Two weeks later, I remember:...liking the music more than I did when I saw them five years ago, but being less affected. Then, it was sufficiently exciting that I felt changed and motivated for a few days. I thought the occasional dose of extremely loud noise might be the solution to something or other. The guitar slashes in Creep, of all things, were joyously, incredibly loud, with white flashes of light. Anyway, the bold plans basically fizzled, and now either I'm too jaded to be affected like that anymore, or I simply didn't work myself into nearly the same kind of anticipation as last time. But the songs on In Rainbows are on average a lot better than those from Hail to the Thief, and especially so live. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. (It was one of their first opportunities to perform in several years, after all.) Given the weather, the predominantly rocksong setlist was perfect. I love Pyramid Song, but wasn't keen to hear anything without a heavy beat. I love No Surprises, but was hoping they wouldn't play it.I'm not quite the fan I was years ago, and it was good to have doubts swept away. They really are a proper rock band, and a terrific one, in almost every way....Jonny and Colin wearing t-shirts most of the time. I took this as a gesture of solidarity with the crowd....Jonny's enthusiasm, moving around as happily as ever while playing his guitar. That a song like Fake Plastic Trees can have that kind of guitar in it, and the whole fit together so nicely, is really worth appreciating....checking my phone every five minutes to see if the very nice Craigslist people who'd driven me there (out on the lawn) were telling me that they couldn't take it anymore. They didn't call, and afterward, when I finally dared to ask them how it was, they didn't seem too traumatized. I wonder if I missed it, though. I also felt guilty about not trying to smuggle them into the pit, which could have stood another few hundred people, if only for warmth, evacuation standards notwithstanding. Was a wristband all that was needed to re-enter the pit? But finding them would have been kind of difficult.
