Thom dejó este medioda un extenso mensaje en Dead Air Space sobre su estadía en Copenhagen, en la Cumbre Internacional sobre el Cambio Climático, y sus impresiones respecto a lo que está sucediendo.
Hola. Llegué a la Cumbre de Copenhagen ayer por la tarde.
Me sentí obligado a venir y que estas charlas me den algo de esperanza. Por nuestros hijos y por los de ellos. Juzguen eso como quieran.
Vine con un amigo mío, Tony Juniper (quién fuera anteriormente la cabeza de Friends of Earth cuando me involucré con ellos al momento de lograr la sanción de la ley climática en el Reino Unido, de la cual tengo una copia enmarcada en una pared de mi casa). Pues, ¿todavía hay alguna esperanza? Pues ayer parecía haber. La primer persona que conocí fue John Vidal de The Guardian, quien dijo que las de nuevo las cosas estaban en movimiento. Luego hablamos con otros que dijeron lo mismo. Luego se pusieron un poco técnicos, cosa que puedo seguir mayormente, pero me perdí un poco cuando comenzaron a hablar de los bosques y aún no puedo entender como puedes dar validez a un acuerdo al estilo del de Kyoto y otro para Estados Unidos y otros lugares al mismo tiempo. Pero luego me estuve presente en un comunicado de prensa británico con Ed Miliband y el me aclaró de cierta forma algunos de estos puntos.
Ayer me pareció que algunos solo querian llevar todo al límite para tratar de sacar el mayor provecho, como fue el caso de los estadounidenses ofrenciendo dinero. Pero nadie hablaba del recorte del 40% hacia el 2020. Y las negociaciones tenían una onda muy G8. Occidente estipulando términos y asumiendo bizarramente que la ciencia podría ser trocada! ¿¿¿¿Discutiendo sobre quien recorta que??? ¿Acaso la cantidad de emisiones que debemos recortar es negociable? Que montón de mierda. Podría humildemente sugerir eliminar a los negociadores profesionales que parecen sacrificar las negociaciones en favor de sus propios intereses? Miliband habló sobre cientos de espacios en el documento esperando para ser rellenados.
Pareciera que los países desarrollados están tratando de hacer algún tipo de negocio con esto, como siempre, a pesar de la enorme presión doméstica y global, y el inminente fin de la vida en la Tierra.
Los recortes no son negociables, son la realidad. No es sorpresa que los países en vías de desarrollo encuentren difícil hacerse cargo y firmar también. Eso y la misteriosa falta de transparecia del proceso.
Lo que es frustrante hasta ahora es la actitud de Estados Unidos. El discurso de Hillry Clinton aparentemente aún trataba de desligarse de las responsabilidades por las emisiones … lo que es francamente una locura.
Obama no se refirío al tema aunque todavía no escuché su discurso. Me siento muy triste por todos los estadounidenses que conozco que aún tienen grandes esperanzas. Aún .. quizá el diía aun no se ha terminado. Son las 3pm del Viernes (aunque debería haber terminado para este momento) y nuestros lideres están completamente conscientes de que están en desgracia. Y muy conscientes también de que no pueden escribir un acuerdo e imponerlo sobre todos nosotros sin que nos demos cuenta inmediatamente de las fallas.
Sin embargo, la atmósfera aquí es muy incómoda por ahora, con muchos de los trajeados obviamente volviendose locos tratando de que esto se vea bien y de encontrar como darle un giro positivo.
Francamente, deberían haber conservado a todas las ONG aquí, echarlas fue un error (… aunque algunas ya han vuelto a ingresar). En este mismo momento deberían estar destruyendo este lugar solo con sus manos, mostrando el completo desagrado que el mundo sentirá si hoy esto termina de esta manera. Y lo digo en condicional. Hay un cuarto de oración y meditación aquí. Quizá deba ir allí para esquivar todas estas cámaras.
Tony me dijo que muchos países latinoamericanos se retiraron. Al menos algunos están mostrando su insatisfacción. La gente está siendo muy paciente.

ok, justo ahora están comenzando a surgir los textos y borradores de todas partes. Justo cuando las cosas parecían no tener viabilidad, aparecen rumores de que Europa se comprometería a reducir aun más sus emisiones. En el aire solo hay histeria y confusión. Han habido pedidos para que los lideres se queden una noche más. ¿Qué demonios está sucediendo? Yo rezo por algo. Rezo para que algo aparezca por todo esto. Por que toda esta gente durante todos estos años, todos los vuelos a Copenhagen, todo este aire caliente haya tenido un significado. Y en medio de todo me preguntan desde la Radio 1 de la BBC “si, pero ¿el cambio climático es realmente cierto?”, etc etc, oh por amor de Dios.

¿cuando es un buen momento para rendirse e ir a comer algo? Los líderes aparentemente aún están discutiendo acaloradamente. ¿Donde? Nadie sabe. Ha habido un debate sobre como votar cualquier decisión… pero es en un idioma de números y procedimientos. He tenido un gran número de camaras y grabadores pegados a mi cara y he tratado de decir lo que una persona externa dentro de esta locura podría pensar. Alguien que quizá este preocupado por la elevación en las temperaturas globales. Alguien que está sufriendo esto de primera mano quizá. Alguien que quizá haya votado a su lider basandosé en que ellos quizá hagan lo correcto sobre esto.. solo para verlos rodeados de esta bruma extraña. Espero que la bruma se disuelva en algún momento esta noche, y que no simulen tener el acuerdo listo cuando no es asi.
Espero que esto no se termine.

creo que quizá ya me cansé del cinismo, de las políticas arriesgadas, de evitar la exposición y de simular posturas. Me cansé de estr sentado entre una multitud de periodistas viendo que cualquier cosa que suceda terminará en nada .. muy loco … ya es demasiado tarde. demasiado tarde

y mientras escribía el mensaje anterior me quedé sin batería y Obama pasó por al lado mio con una expresión bastante seria. todo el mundo pensó que se retiraba, pero no … había estado hablando con los chinos. Y en este momento un delegado francés me dice que Brasil se retiró de las conferencias. Esto es muy triste. Aun le deseo paz y buena predisposición a toda la humanidad. Amor y entendimiento.
Simplemente no hagan mas negocios como siempre, ¿ok? Esto se está comenzando a parecer a una enorme exposición corporativa y vagamente sin sentido.

creo que esta época del año es un momento para una reflexión seria y he estado haciendo eso desde que volví de Copenhagen.
¿saben lo que más me sorprendió al volver? la ira que se puede sentir en el ambiente sobre esto, todo el mundo con el que me encuentro quiere hablar al respecto… todo el mundo está enojado y desolado y he tratado de mantenerme positivo al hablar con ellos sobre el tema… quizá haya despertado algo en el fondo de las cabezas de la gente cuerda de todo el mundo quienes quizá inocentemente asumieron que las charlas tendrían un final positivo.
Con una reacción tan fuerte espero que quizá la gente esté comenzando a unir los puntos y nuestra adoración incuestionable a la economía basada en el carbono se desmorone justo a tiempo.
La gente cuerda en el gobierno, en los medios, y en las calles está siendo despertada bruscamente de un sueño viendo a los niños a su alrededor y enojándose mucho mas que antes.
Pero esta energía necesita un desahogo constructivo.

“El presidente estadounidense más progresista de la última generación vino a la cumbre internacional más importante desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial para dar un discurso tan falto de sustancia qué podría bien haberlo hecho desde un teléfono en una playa de Hawaii. Sus ayudantes dicen en privado que no tenía opción, que es tal la oposición en Capitol Hill a cualquier accion que amenace la dominación de los combustibles fósiles en la vida estadounidense. Y es por que la nación que puso a un hombre en la luna no puede hacer un esfuerzo colectivo para proteger a los hombres y mujeres de la Tierra por las consecuencias en el modelo económico y el estilo de vida que ha tomado la misma fuerza que la religión.
Luego, un mandatario chino que está en proceso de convertir su nación comunista a esta nueva religión (el capitalismo que consume grandes cantidades de carbono) se ofende tanto por el discurso de Obama que se niega a reunirse – se niega de hecho a todo excepto hacer berrinches en su habitación de hotel, como si fuera una fiesta en la casa de un adolescente en lugar de último esfuerzo para evitar el colapso de nuestra biosfera.
Al final del día, los dos hombres se reunen y garabatean juntos una colección de párrafos a los que llaman “un acuerdo”, a pesar de que en realidad tiene tanto valor como un boleto de autobus, lo cual no los detiene de colocar sus firmas con mucha solemnidad. El equipo de Obama luego instruye al equipo de prensa de la Casa Blanca – muchos de los cuales, al parecer, comprende tanto de las políticas del calentamiento global como nuestros reporteros lobbistas comprenden de baseball – y antes de que nos demos cuenta el New York Times y la CNN declaran el nacimiento de un “acuerdo significativo”.
Mientras tanto, un amigo de la delegación africana envía un email para decir que el y muchos otros miembros del bloque G77 de países en desarrollo están tomando los pasillos luego de una larga discusión sobre el estado peligroso de estas charlas, solo para ver a Obama en la televisión anunciando que el mundo llegó a un acuerdo. Es la primera vez que escuchan esto, y minutos después, al leer el texto, se dan cuenta rápidamente que el mismo condena a su continente a un siglo de elevaciones devastadoras de temperatura.
Para este momento, los lideres europeos – quienes saben que esto es una farsa, pero tienen que presentarlo a su gente como un progreso – hacen que sus ayudantes llamen a los directores de las Organizaciones civiles diciendoles que las charlas fueron exitosas. ¿Exitosas? Este acuerdo sobrepasa tantas de las lineas rojas establecidas por Europa antes de esta cumbre que hay marcas de neumáticos rojizas en el piso de Bella Centre, y uno de los diplomáticos honestos europeos nos dice que este es “un acuerdo de mierda”. Bastante.
Este acuerdo es más que malo. No contiene objetivos legalmente vinculantes o alguna indicación de cuando llegarán. Ni siquiera hay una dclaración de que el mundo intentará hacer descender la temperatura en 2 grados celsius – sino que los lideres simplemente “reconocen la ciencia” que hay detrás de tal objetivo vital, como si eso fuera suficiente como para no permitirnos cruzarlo. La única parte de este acuerdo que cualquier persona cuerda ha agradecido de cierta forma es el fondo anual de 100 billones para el Clima global, pero al parecer está sabiendosé que se compone de presupuestos que ya existían, sin indicar como nuevo dinero será recaudado y distribuido a los países más pobres para que puedan ser más amigables con el medio ambiente y adaptarse al cambio climático.
No todos los políticos se merecen la desaprobación de un mundo escandalizado. Nuestro propio Ed Miliband luchó duro para no conformarse con un resultado mejor, mientras el Presidente Lula de Brasil ofreció asistir financieramente a otros países en desarrollo para palear el cambio climático y poner un objetivo firme en discusión. Pero la Unión Europea no movilizó su propio compromiso (uno tan débil que tuvimos que trabajar duro para no cumplirlo) mientras los Estados Unidos ofrecieron nada y China se mantuvo firme. Antes de que comiencen las conferencias, opinaba que solo consideraríamos a Copenhagen como exitosa si planes para estaciones de energía en base a carbón alrededor del mundo eran descartadas. Si las grandes corporaciones veían que el resultado de Copenhagen era una señal inconfundible de que los gobiernos estaban decididos a actuar y que las plantas de carbón de este siglo serían muy costosas de mantener bajo el mismo régimen acordado en esta cumbre, entonces esta cumbre sería un éxito. Sin embargo, mientras los detalles del acuerdo comienzan a aparecer, recibimos informes de representantes de la oposición japoneses descorchando champaña al ver el posible colapso de los planes de utilizar carbón de su nuevo gobierno. No solo no hemos llegado a donde deberíamos haber llegado, sino que hemos dado un paso atrás. No hay nada en este acuerdo – nada – que persuada a cualquier corporación energética de que la era del sucio carbón ha terminado. Y que las implicaciones para la humanidad de ese simple hecho son muy serias.
Se que los ambientalistas somos parciales a la hiperbole. Usamos la lengua como un arma para dirigir la atención hacia los problemas que enfrentamos, y escucharás mucho más en los próximos días. Pero realmente, no es exagerado describir el resultado de Copenhagen como una falla histórica que vivirá en la infamia. En un solo día, en un solo lugar, un show fue armado frente a un público descreido que ha leído y comprendido que las más sombrías advertencias de las mentes científicas más brillantes – y de lo que han sido testigos no ha sido nada menos que el peor de los instintos de nuestra especie a través de el hombre más poderoso que haya vivido.
Le dejaré la última palabra al difunto Kurt Vonnegut Jr., quién le habría dado voz a la locura de Copenhagen mejor de lo que yo podría, y su poema “Requiem” es quiza el más apropiado para este momento: “cuando la última criatura viva, haya muerto por nuestra culpa, que poético sería que la Tierra pueda decir, en una voz flotante, quiza desde el fondo del Gran Cañon, ‘ha terminado. a la gente no le gustaba vivir aquí’”.

One of my New Year's resolutions: reanimate this blog. And why not start now? Had a meeting with my boss' boss yesterday which went, despite all worries, surprisingly well. I know they usually work hand in hand so complaining to one about the other is not really a smart move. But I think I brought a few facts to her attention that she wasn't aware of and since I didn't put out any demands concerning my work but concentraded on what generally seems to be wrong with our working situation, she definitely had a open ear. whew! I was really concerned about how this meeting would go but I got a very nice feed back via e-mail today, so I am convinced that my arguements have been taken to notice.
Night shift tonight, so I took a nap this afternoon. I dreamt that I walked over a crowded marked and found a skate board. Discovered that I was a natural on it! *snorts* It felt really easy in my dream but I think I am a little to old to make a fool of myself. At least with a skate board.

I no longer feel like I can do much on my own. I mean, I can, but... there's things missing. I'm not getting the information I want, I'm not following through with it, I'm not focused and I'm concluding it to loneliness. Obviously not physical loneliness because I'm only alone before bed, like now, but mental loneliness if that makes sense. And let me tell you, it's not much better than the previous. My thoughts are single, solitary... there's nothing to feed them, agree, disagree, understand, misunderstand. I don't know if it's me or the company I'm keeping. In a perfect world it would of course be the company I keep as I wouldn't be able to do any wrong, but in a realistic world, it's probably me... being secluded intellectually, pretending more that I don't think much harder than I have to, to get through the day. I've gotten pretty good at faking people out, and myself to be honest. Sometimes I do think that I'm slightly taking on traits of a very person I don't want to be. A person who stays quiet, stays in the background. A person who looks at the people living "MY" life and thinks "What if it never happens?". I just want to learn more and more and more and more and I need to be pointed in the right direction.goddamnit

The music industry has continued to slowly adapt to this new digital-era of music which has presented itself to be a challenge both to the record labels as well as the artists themselves. Despite this, it's still has been a good year for music. Musicians everywhere have relied on the word-of-mouth bloggesphere to create enough buzz that will land them on some listener's iPod next time they decide to take a break from watching Mad Men or playing guitar hero. This is the times we live in. With bands such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart having plenty of buzz at the start of this year while other bands like XX ended the year with plenty of buzz of their own. Established artists saw the release of new albums while other bands took breaks from their own collective groups to create what is now becoming a new trend in these new so-called "super-groups". As far as the decade goes, the way I see it, it began with Kid A and ended with Merriweather Post Pavilion, two key albums that will forever be linked to the 00s. In looking forward to next year and into the next decade, one can only imagine what directions music will take and what steps the music industry will need to take in oder to continue to make profits from legitimate and talented artists and not have to rely so much on just another manufactured one-hit wonder "rock band". I love PF from 1967-83, but just a bit more with Syd. I always thought of PF very innovative & clever all around, but more sophisticated with Syd, no doubt. I wrote a lyric 1-2 yrs after he had died. I did the best I could, but I will let u decide? U can check it out below with the rest of my work. I've wondered what PF would've been like through the yrs if Syd was still with them. I think that maybe David Bowie was & is a mirror image of Barrett. Syd was brilliant, an artist!

Here, in the darkness, surrounded by mechanical whirring sounds I feel...alone. Not lonely, just alone. Quiet sleeping children offer peace in their slumber. If I listen closely, there is music in their breathing, for none of them sleep in true silence. I am missing the conductor, the leader of the band, the loudest of them all. Tonight, there is a noticeable drop in the volume of ambient sound. And I, alone, have noticed. It is unsettling. With no prior knowledge of the soothing properties of such nocturnal noises, the lack of them has lead to insomnia. I thought the loudest had been keeping me awake. Perhaps this is only when it is loud enough to wake me in the first place. Now, I close my eyes and long to slip into the ethereal dreamscape. The only thought looming above me is the fact that there are three more silent nights to lie awake. And upon the return of the midnight rumbler, I will finally be able to rest. There is nothing quite like the mimicked sound of distant thunder in your ear. The question is: will I then have to trade sleep for service?

Hello everyone,On my way home from vacation today, I picked up a cup of coffee and a magazine as I usually do. My magazine of choice is most likely National Geographic or Spin, but this morning Spin won the battle hands down: Thom Yorke was on the cover, staring at me from the shelves! Giddy with excitement (hoping to read a little tidbit about the new work he/Radiohead is doing), I swipe it and purchase it right away. However, as I pull it out on the plane, I finally read the captions: "Inconvenient truths: Radiohead can do wrong!"And my purchase, all of a sudden, felt so dirty.Initially I was filled with angry confusion at this allegation; I barely wanted to read the article. So I tried to ignore it and read the other articles about up-and-coming indie bands and show reviews. Inevitably, however, I stumbled upon the article. I decided to be a responsible critic and read the other side of the story...The article, written by Chris Norris, is titled "MYTH: Radiohead are the most important, visionary band in the world. REALITY: Radiohead wish they were special." What a cleverly ironic and inappropriate statement there, Chris. Already I was fuming, simply due to the fact that Radiohead has said time and time again they do not wish for the amount fame and prestige they have now. It almost killed them, especially Thom. Also, "Creep" was the blessing covered in sludge that would haunt the band forever; the song that would and will unfortunately (though it is a good song, don't get me wrong) define the band to the masses. Usage of that song in the ironic contradiction was almost contradictory to the article itself...it lacked proof of depth of analysis.Moving on. I highly, highly recommend you read the article for yourself (Spin Magazine Dec 2009), but if I have to sum it up in a few points:*The albums after "OK Computer" essentially sound the same and are based on the same musical principles*The band contradicted itself when they stopped the pay-what-you-want online basis for "In Rainbows" and started selling hard copies in stores, making them less revolutionary than they'd like to be seen*They are putting on a show full of revolutionary ideas that seem to never be fulfilled or justified (the online experiment, experimentation with electronic music, "The eraser")*The audience seems to be more excited by the oldies rather than the new work*They fail to "settle for good" in exchange for being "special", which apparently is not respectable.Ta fucking da.Okay, so after reading the article, I was surprisingly relieved to know that the author was not a completely ignorant Radiohead-basher, which is what I was afraid of. There are too many people who choose to ignore the band simply because of how prominent they seem; they do not want to become the 3 millionth person to fall into the musical trap that is Radiohead. And I had to recognize that it is the fans like me who are scaring people like Chris into silence about how they truly feel about Radiohead, so I applaud him for having the balls to write this, and well. His points are somewhat understandable. I can see how the band may seem after stopping their online experiment with In Rainbows and selling CDs in store--hypocritical. After OK Computer, the influence of electronica and innovative technique weaved its way into the minds of Radiohead and it would forever change their sound, which may or may not sound similar to some.In a regular blog, I would pose my argument here. However, Spin has also alerted readers that if they have their opinions about the article(s) that they should write a response to the magazine, and they will print the best ones in the next issue. This is where I will place my carefully laid out rebuttal to this story. It will take time, and I definitely do not want to come off as a blindly obsessed Radiohead fan by thrashing Chris for ever taking them from their throne. Informed and open-minded is the way to go. I don't want to necessarily declare them the most immaculate of bands (though I may or may not believe so in my own eyes), but I do want to acknowledge their justified musical genius, innovation, and intelligence, as well as their constant longing to break away from the mainstream music industry.I will post my work on the same blog when it's finished, hopefully soon. I feel like no one will read it, but that's okay. I'm a writer; I'm pretty used to unacknowledged work, haha. But I'll feel as if I've done something for them, whether it gets read or not. I'm really mad at myself. I feel like I've been afraid of ... everything for so long. At the same time I have no idea what it is that I'm actually afraid of. This fear conquers my entire life though. It keeps me from doing a lot of the things I WANT to do. I'm so scared of... something. Even worse I know if I don't do something about it soon I'm going to grow up and be that person who hates them self because I'll be thinking "what if" all the time. What if I had done that, what if I had said that.... damnit, and hold on to some form of regret for not doing everything I always wanted to. I don't know what holds me back though. It's myself for sure. It's definitely in my head... I don't know how to get it out.

Once we found a place to sit this was a fantastic experience. No-one sat down for long anyway and we had a fantastic view of a great show. There will probably be a DVD release because there were loads of cameras there.Some people seemed to think the set was on the short side, but there were a few instrumentals which may account for that.The new stuff from 'The Resistance' was so superior to hearing it on the album it's no wonder that Muse are consistently considered one of the best Live Bands.A good selection of older stuff too with one of my all time favourites - 'Plug in Baby'Muse Set List Madrid 28th November 2009 Courtesy setlist.fm1.
