The problem might be that I never lie. Or that I never fear sharing my bizarre observations about time and space and music and people. Or because I don't dress like YOUR MOM usually does. Or because I laugh at everything. And I never get mad. Ha! The more I write about this, the more I realize that it is not a problem at all!

Sasha Ring’s work under his Apparat moniker has always been evolving; over three albums on the Shitkatapult label and the collaborative full lengths with Ellen
Allien and Modeselektor as Moderat on Bpitch Control, he’s surprised a lot of
listeners with his output. Confined to little or no definitive style his music
has always been in a constant state of metamorphosis, simultaneously breaching
new waters and staying true to his unique spirit of musical openness and his
obvious passion for sound design.

Aptly joking that his DJ KiCKs selection reflects his style to “not really have a style” it’s evident that Ring is more than aware that his contribution to the
series might look ‘intelligent’ on paper – with the tracklist aligning variant
artists like Oval, Autechre, Ripperton and Thom Yorke – but given his recent
tour at the start of the year, it’s simply a representation of where he’s at in
terms of modern music. “I didn’t want to
make this kind of ‘smart’ mix, that’s eclectic and sounds like it’s done ‘on purpose;’
but I need to do different things to keep myself motivated,” Ring explains. “At
first I wanted to make a collection of influences, all kinds of old songs but
then sometimes with those mixes it’s hard to keep some kind of flow and they’re
just not very easy to listen to, so I ended up using good new music; music that
almost gave me hope that there’s more out there than boring minimal
techno.” The Apparat contribution is as
stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden; with
Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his
personality and his brave take on ‘club’ music. With an incredibly prevalent
talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from
a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn – whose ‘Miniluv’
provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice
Baumel’s ‘Sub’ – and Ramadanman’s ‘Tempest’ – whose melody all but dissipates
at the optimum moment – layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from
across an array of genres from Autechre’s percussive white noise to Oval’s
erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o’s
‘Intervall.’

“A mix needs a bit of dynamic,’ he states. “There were these weirder things I wanted to use, like this Four Tet remix (of Born Ruffian’s ‘I Need A Life’) and
then there are some tracks i had to use as tools to glue it all togehter. The
way I used the Martyn track is more of a tool to adjust the Patrice Baumel
track dynamically to the following ones. But most of the songs are in there for
musical reasons. All these artists have their own sound signatures and manage
to inject that space into every new song they produce.”

Achieving a sense of progression in the mix through both his selections and his awareness of sonic space, Ring manages to harness his enthusiasms for frequency perfect
soundscapes, often creating moments of sheer beauty out of his polarized
composite parts.

“The mix isn’t that balanced when it comes to melody I guess,” he continues, considering his point. “There’s a lot of sweetness on there, but it is dark and
mysterious at points. I guess the bittersweet-ness has long been kind of my
thing and with this mix I was just trying to spice it up a bit.”

ELECTRONICA WITH BBC CONCERT ORCHESTRA & JONNY GREENWOOD

Will Gregory Moog Ensemble

We have now released a number of tickets for restricted-view seats at this sold-out concert. You can reserve your ticket by phone 0844 847 9910 (£2.50 transaction fee). Transaction fees apply per transaction, not per ticket.

Instrumental music by Goldfrapp's Will Gregory, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and others featuring theremins, Moogs and ondes Martenots - electronic instruments that were once symbols of music catching up with the Machine Age, yet still today appear somehow futuristic.

Director Alfred Hitchcock invited surrealist artist Salvador Dalí to create a dream sequence for his film Spellbound. Miklós Rózsa's soundtrack for this scene evokes the otherworldly with a theremin - an eternally mysterious instrument that conjures sound without being touched.

Hollywood got wind of this and soon Bernard Herrmann's score for the 1951 sci-fi epic The Day The Earth Stood Still was made rich with sonic lunar landscapes created by wibbly wobbly theremins and a Hammond organ rewiring the conventional orchestral palette.

French composer André Jolivet's Suite delphique is a sonic monolith with woodwind, percussion and ondes martenot at its core.

And, moving into the Space Age, Wendy Carlos' synths transform familiar Bach melodies into mechanistic sound sculptures, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood infuses his rock albums with ondes Martenot glissandos and tremolos, bringing that tactile sound to his orchestral piece Smear, and Goldfrapp's Will Gregory reimagines the Moog synthesiser in his Journey into the Sky.

Tropicana's weekly Nightswim party is always a great time, but last night's was especially awesome when it turned philanthropic with The Voice Project. Oh, and the musical genius of Radiohead, Thom Yorke, took over the turntables. Nightswim has been the Thursday night spot
throughout the summer, with a special guest DJ here and pop up shop there over
the weeks. Last night's installment of the party was presented by The
Voice Project, a group that works for the peace movement in Uganda through art
and music. The L.A. Ladies ChoirNigel Godrich,Ana Calderon, and Bryan Ling spun special sets for the crowd. The party hit awhole new level when the one-and-only Thom Yorke got on the decks.Yes, we're talking about the lead singer/songwriter of the eminent, Radiohead. Although L.A. tried to keep its 'too cool forschool' attitude in check, you know everyone was totally pooping their pants --an appropriate response to the musical icon. Dancing to Thom Yorke's musicalselection? Enough said. The night was fantastic, and all for a good cause. performed live for the attendees, and DJs.

I lay down knowing I may need to spend the night.

My ethereal transport. It takes me on a guided tour of a place outside myself. I leave this body to float above. Till I fall back in; slide back in gently and feel every cell tingling, tumbling. Just then, when I truly feel that I've landed, suddenly, I am lifted again. I have evaporated and reformed. Every part of me is in its right place.

2009 --The Best In Music.

The music industry has continued to slowly adapt to this new digital-era of music which has presented itself to be a challenge both to the record labels as well as the artists themselves. Despite this, it's still has been a good year for music. Musicians everywhere have relied on the word-of-mouth bloggesphere to create enough buzz that will land them on some listener's iPod next time they decide to take a break from watching Mad Men or playing guitar hero. This is the times we live in. With bands such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart having plenty of buzz at the start of this year while other bands like XX ended the year with plenty of buzz of their own. Established artists saw the release of new albums while other bands took breaks from their own collective groups to create what is now becoming a new trend in these new so-called "super-groups". As far as the decade goes, the way I see it, it began with Kid A and ended with Merriweather Post Pavilion, two key albums that will forever be linked to the 00s. In looking forward to next year and into the next decade, one can only imagine what directions music will take and what steps the music industry will need to take in oder to continue to make profits from legitimate and talented artists and not have to rely so much on just another manufactured one-hit wonder "rock band". With that being said, here are the lists of favorite albums and songs of the year, albums of the decade and even a favorite MJ songs list as a way of paying tribute to the man's legacy. In hoping Nickelback finally goes away in the coming decade, happy new year everybody!-SSAY2K9 ALBUMS:[50] Passion Pitt - MannersKey tracks: "Little Secrets" & "The Reeling"[49] Peter Bjorn & John - Living ThingKey tracks: "If It Don't Move Me" & "Nothing To Worry About"[48] Handsome Furs - Face ControlKey tracks: "Legal Tender" & "I'm Confused"[47] jj - n° 2Key tracks: "Things Will Never Be The Same Again" & "Ecstasy"[46] Sonic Youth - The EternalKey tracks: "Antenna" & "Sacred Trickster"[45] Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague LoversKey tracks: "Peeled Apples" & "Journal For Plague Lovers"[44] Islands - VapoursKey tracks: "Switched On" & "Vapours"[43] M. Lose Big

I guess I'm far too superstitious not to recognize and thank the universe for not metaphorically zapping me into the ether on the 13th day that is a Friday. Experience tells me it's a good idea to be grateful for a reason to smile on Valentines Day. The nice folks at 429 records liked what I did with the song "Lose Big" so they let me know they aren't threatening to sue or anything because I used their client's song for the personal visual project of the moment. *
Lose Big from Heather Wizell on Vimeo.

A river offers a rafter's test of a boat's endurance, and the site for an unlikely canine love triangle. Photo stills by Heather Wizell. Lose Big is a song by Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide on 429 Records.

But for the record, I always make an effort to let people know and if they don't like what I did, I'm always happy to remove the offended party's music.)I'm still pretty new with this media- so, don't worry, I'm not paying any real bills with this and at the same time preventing you from paying yours. We really are all friends who support creatives here , aren't we?Happy Valentines Day*... so I guess I have THAT going for me...

Oh wow

lately, i've been listening to a lot of simple, country-esque or to be hipster about it, americana (yea hehe) music. there is a certain coming home vibe to it. makes me feel very much at ease--hold on, keep on reading, i'm not about to try and preach and all. listening to that kind of music makes everything seem simple and good and here is your bed, why don't you curl up and let momma sing you a lullabye.i thought this music is it. all's good, yea? no need to showcase technicality. no need for volume. everything's nice and pleasing. everything is all heart.but in japan, as i was watching radiohead, the only thing going inside my head is: no, no, no This is It. This is where it's at. To be completely juvenile: This is who i am.sure country-esque music, all that strumming and humming and all, pats my back. but radiohead, they make me want to be a better person. radiohead, i hope you're reading this. you're like who's-the-girl-opposite-jack nicholson-in-As Good as It Gets? you're like her and i'm saying: "You make me want to be a better man" only, change man to woman because i am a girl.i had wanted to write about the experience but i wasn't going to rush myself. you wanna know why? i want to give justice to the band and the music and the performance and the experience. yikes, there isn't a better way of saying it than in my native language: masukilan ko man lang kayo.am i sounding like an annoyingly earnest fuckface? sorry. it's just that the oct 2 was my first radiohead show. that was my first time in japan. and i met a man and and it wasn't casual or cheap or gross because that was a part of the whole radiohead experience . sorry, am i tmi-ing? apologies.there were a few times during the show when i had wanted, so badly, to close my eyes and allow music to take the lead. but fuck it, i needed to know, i needed to be sure that yes i was there. at the radiohead concert. oh, lookie, that's the band on stage. luckily, at the hostel i'm staying at, i met a french woman who had an extra oct 5 ticket. yes, i bought it for a double whammy extravagance.the music was more than enough. the band's presence was beyond my meter. at twice the love, now that's amazing. simply amazing.i'm sorry. it's just that i think all my friends have heard everything they needed to hear about the experience and here i am still a brimful, a month after. le effing sigh.so, yes, radiohead thank you. you don't just cradle me after a horrible day. your music makes me want to do things better, become a better person. it's where i thrive the most. so thank you.

This piece of information is a bit old, but still...Police vet live music, DJs for 'terror risk'Locking down garage...and RnB, basementBy Andrew OrlowskiPosted in Policing, 11th November 2008 15:43 GMTA dozen London boroughs have implemented a "risk assessment" policy for live music that permits the police to ban any live music if they fail to receive personal details from the performers 14 days in advance. The demand explicitly singles out performances and musical styles favoured by the black community: garage and R&B, and MCs and DJs.However all musical performances - from one man playing a guitar on up - are subject to the demands once implemented by the council. And the threat is serious: failure to comply "may jeopardise future events by the promoter or the venue".UK Music chief Feargal Sharkey told a House of Commons select committee that the policy had already been used to pull the plug on an afternoon charity concert of school bands in a public park organised by a local councillor."No alcohol would be sold, tickets were limited to three maximum, and the councillor offered to supply eight registered doormen. Police objected on the grounds that the names, addresses and dates of birth of the young performer could not be provided," said Sharkey, speaking to the Department of Culture Media and Sport's hearing on venue licensing today."Live music is now a threat to the prevention of terrorism", he concluded. In response, Detective Superintendent Dave Eyles from the Met's clubs and vice office told us that 10,000 such Risk Assessments would be processed this year. He said they weren't compulsory:"We can't demand it - we recommend that you provide it as best practice. But you're bloody silly if you don't, because you're putting your venue at risk."The Risk Assessment, or to give its official name "Form 696" can be found here (Word doc 184kb or Google HTML cache). We've highlighted a couple of excerpts below.Black urban musical styles are singled outBashment Jaxx? Black urban musical styles are singled outLicensing of live music is nominally under the democratic control of local authorities. However, few councillors dare contradict the advice of the constabulary - even when such advice exceeds the police's authority, as it does here.John Whittingdale, the Culture select committee chairman, described it as "a consequence of the Metropolitan Poice exceeding what is required by law".The police want information 14 days in advance to assess the risk of a terror threat'Propensity to violence'"Have a look at the papers and tell me where the black-on-black shootings happen? They're around the night time economy," said Eyles."Music promotions attract people who have a propensity to use violence. That's not speculation. We have a duty to prevent that from happening."But even if that's true, why vet then the performers? Unless the performers attack the audience, Sid Vicious-style in the fictional Great Rock and Roll Swindle?"We're not vetting the performers - we're looking at the audience. It's not the music it's the people who follow it, who use that event as a catalyst to commit crimes. But, Form 696 explictly vets the performers. We read it out."Some venues use their inhouse DJs all the time - others fly them in from around the world. It's not just their track record in the UK we're looking at but we're looking worldwide - what has happened historically at those events".With the police groaning under bureaucracy, was 10,000 extra forms really justified?"We can effectively look at those venues and say by putting in some measures as a last resort, canceling the event, we can prevent crime."But didn't Sharkey's example - a kids concert in the park - suggest that the system was being abused?"I would doubt that's factually correct," said Eyles. "I've never known an event to be cancelled because a Risk Assessment wasn't completed. If we went to the organisers and asked them to pull it, we would be laughed out of court. I cannot believe that would happen. In itself, it's not grounds to shut an event down."Readers can browse 696 and judge for themselves. ®

Found a new Band to listen to!!!

New to me anyway. They're called Home Video. :P I'm excited since I rarely, rarely ever discover a new band that I like. Unfortunately most music nowadays has changed far from my taste. I hear the occasional new song I like, but rarely a band. The only time I usually like something new on the radio is if its from one of my old bands I already know.Anyways, (so far at least) I think I'm really going to like them. A few influences:The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Björk, Massive Attack, Brian Eno, Radiohead, The Cocteau Twins, Boards of Canada, My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, PortisheadAnd by the way - I'm really excited that the Verve is back now. I need to go get that new album...

Top 50ish Favorite Radiohead Songs
52/ Palo Alto - Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP - 1998It was only last week that I finally got my hands on a special edition of the Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP. I've always had the EP digitally but I never bought a physical copy. So as I was driving home from the record store with the songs blaring in my car, the CD player came to "Palo Alto" and I remembered just how much I love this song. I still think that this is the only b-side from the OK Computer era that could have had a place on the album without the album being made worse. I just love the explosions of guitar on "But I'm OK (BADADADA) How are you? (BADADADA)"51/ Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003How could you not like this song? I absolutely love it. Album version and live version. I love the way this song starts and when the beat comes in with Thom's vocals. The song does suffer from an ending that's slightly too long but I love it regardless. I really, really want an instrumental version!50/ Go Slowly - In Rainbows (Disc 2) - 2007When this song first appeared in a set at a gig in England back in 2006, it was ok. Nothing to go on about. It was neat to hear a brand new song but the song itself wasn't very comparable with the rest of material that was debuted in both the same gig and later gigs. Then they released In Rainbows and I got my discbox in the mail and listened to the studio version. WOW. The song has such a cold and dark and pretty feel to it. Like a mysterious dark-haired girl. The song never really builds into a proper climax but the acoustic guitar at the end is more than enough. Not to mention the beautiful glockenspiel and electric guitar riffs. And that guitar "solo!" One detail I really miss from the live version is a riff that Jonny played during the verses that gave the song a slight "desolate desert" sound to the song. Oh well.49/ (Nice Dream) - The Bends - 1995One of my favorites off of The Bends. I absolutely love the chord changes in this song. I would be close to tears if I heard this played live at a future concert. Good tears, of course.48/ Scatterbrain (As Dead As Leaves.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003I've never fully understood why I love this song so much but it's such a perfectly formulated song. The sound, guitars, drums, singing, chord changes all fit the constant mood of the song: looking out a large window at a rainy, windy, messy-weather day. The trees blowing back and forth and the rain causing the whole image to distort.47/ Videotape - In Rainbows - 2007I would feel confident in saying this is one of the more "controversial" songs of Radiohead's repertoire. Not for the lyrics or singing. But for what they did to the studio version. Essentially, they took everything that made the song a fan favorite during its trial runs at live venues and got rid of it. The best live version of this song is definitely the Hammersmith Apollo debut of the song. It was the first time it was ever played publicly and it EXPLODED with energy. But when they got into the studio, they took away the proper drums and guitar and replaced them with a quiet electronic beat and... no guitar. But the twist? The studio version is actually a lot better and more fitting for the song. The lyrics go with the new version so much better than the 2006 live version. It took a couple of months before it clicked. But when it did, it became a personal favorite.46/ Where I End and You Begin (The Sky Is Falling In.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003This song features some of my favorite drumming and one of my favorite themes (musically) of all time (the opening notes). Also some fantastic lyrics. My favorite live performance of the song definitely has to be the performance I experienced firsthand in Atlanta this year.45/ Optimistic - Kid A - 2000I fell in love with this song when I picked up Kid A so long ago... and then I stopped listening to it. It became boring to me. And then Radiohead performed it in Atlanta this year. And I fell back in love with it. The studio version is so rich with "bony-sounding" guitars and a tribal sound unlike any other song they've done before. The lyrics follow the same theme with the opening line: "Flies are buzzing round my head. Vultures circling the dead. Picking up every last crumb." This song just ties together the overall sound of Kid A so perfectly. "Dinosaurs roaming the earth."44/ You and Whose Army? - Amnesiac - 2001I was stuck on this song for a good two weeks when I first got Amnesiac about 4 years ago. It starts so muddled... it reminds me of a man tired and weak from battle, the obvious loser of the fight, continuing to egg on the oversized army ahead of him. He then leads his small force against the larger in their last battle. This is also a live favorite of mine.43/ Fog (Again) - Com Lag 2plus2is5 - 2004"Fog (Again)" is just that song that is irresistable to sing along to. I love every inch of it. It makes me want to cry when I hear it just because it's such an emotion-riddled song. I'm not a huge fan of the electronic (or, original) version of the song though.42/ A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll.) - Hail To The Thief - 2003As I was listening to Scatterbrain while writing this, the song ended and skipped to the next song, "A Wolf At The Door." And I completely forgot how incredibly badass this song really is. Apologies for not originally considering it but when you have a few hundred songs to pick from the task gets a little daunting. Please find and listen to the Atlanta 2003 performance of this song. Amazing.41/ Lift - Live in Salamanca - 2002I don't think I need to describe why I like this song. Or why it needs to be on LP8. Or why I want them to play it live soon. Or why I love Thom's voice in it.More to come!

I'd like to recommend a book I just bought yesterday (I've read about half so far) called The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music by Victor L. Wooten. It's answered a lot of the questions I had about how music 'works' and why it's the most powerful form of art. I think it's brilliantly written... in a way that's not condescending or off-putting at all, and most of all--even though it's a book for musicians--I understand the musical terms in a way I was never able to before. I kind of found this book by accident. I am also reading Music, the Brain, and Ecstasy: How Music Captures Our Imagination by Robert Jourdain. I have no doubt that it's a great book as well (my brother who's an avid reader and a musician recommended it to me), but after the first chapters I got completely lost, not knowing anything about music theory. Wooten's book--instead--is extremely easy to understand although it probably goes more into depth into that subject. One of the best things about taking the bus to work is that I've almost been forced to read again. I couldn't do this for the past four years or so.... maybe longer. I got bored of looking at the same streetscapes after the first week so I decided to finally start reading Thomas Mann after trying for who knows how long. I managed to finish a book of his short stories. I love his style and subject matter, by the way, and I've also finished reading a self-help book someone urged me to read. I did... even though I hate that type of book... and it was okay. I definitely wouldn't have bought it and wouldn't read it again but I decided to take the best out of it and put it into practice.I've been suffering from depression most of my life and it's been worse these past few years, so I'll try anything at least once if there's any hope I'll ever come out of this. Even music doesn't work its magic on me anymore... not as much as it did before. The book I'm reading will hopefully work its magic on me. Over the past few days I've learned a lot about myself and about the decisions I've made over the past few years. It's been 'enlightening'. I had almost convinced myself I'd never understand. I'm starting to now and I'm experiencing more beautiful moments as a result.

Radiohead, Hurricane Festival 22/6/08

Good job guys

Some personal favourites over the weekend at the Hurricane Festival - Couldn't get there for the Friday, but then - Biffy Clyro, Elbow, Sigur Ros and then a blinding set from Radiohead. Camping meant no sleep at all for two nights; nothing to do with the loud music playing all over the camp, there was a spider in the tent! The advertising thingy at the side of the stage being repaired during Elbow's set did nothing to detract from how good they are on the big stage. The Loneliness of the Tower Crane Driver enhanced by the rigging guys as they struggled with the wind and fabric to put things back togetherRadiohead were superb as ever and this show seemed to run with fewer of the gremlins that they have experienced on other dates. The music and the light show were quite brilliant even if the set was a little shorter than at other times. (Stop your moaning people. You can't complain about that. Be fair we never want Radiohead to stop playing.) The weather was even kind. Severe weather warnings flagged up on the monitors promised heavy rain and wind and they were not wrong. My bright yellow Radiohead rain mac kept me well dry and it had all cleared up before a surprise start with Planet Telex. So much to tell, but I'm too tired - I need sleep! Here's another picture

Wychwood Music Festival

Great weekend of music, mad dancing, dressing up - and down! and new food experiences, ( Crocodile Burger anyone?). Highlights for me; The Blockheads, Duffy, Orchestra Baobab, The Imagined Village and Stornaway. The real ale was not the only attraction in the Wickwar tent, honestly. There were some really talented young musicians playing, 'We See Lights' and 'The Travelling Band' among many who caught my ear. In the Big Top Tent Mor Karbasi was real quality. The weather was kind to those of us who chose to camp and the sun shone brightly through cloud cover that threatened to put a damper on things, but only managed a pathetic shower on Saturday morning so early that most people didn't even notice. Cheltenham Racecourse must be the most beautiful venue for an event like this.Solar powered cinema was well worth a visit. Saw a fantastically gory, but brilliantly animated adult cartoon 'Free Jimmy' that really deserves a wider audience.Should have recovered by next weekend for Dublin!
